U.S. Military Deaths in Iraq - 547 U.S. service members have died

1. CNN says 549.

But I bet it's really higher. We're not hearing about the soldiers who die a week after they get to hospital, etc, and I don't think the media can keep up with those. I think the 549 is those killed on the spot or dying the next day. I bet they don't count someone who dies from infection, etc.

Sickening that we're having to keep an eye on this. And people think the war is over?

4. Ilsa, I do think the number is correct.
If you go to this site you can see that there are listed men who have died later in German, Kuwaiti, British, and American hospitals.

according to Washington Post and Antiwar.com

Edit: possibly 551 after today... talked to my husband (in Iraq) and he saw a bad accident with one guy that's "not looking like he's gonna make it".

8. Hi Tolania...My best to you and your husband.
I just wanted to make sure that people understood that you can't hide some massive number of US deaths in Iraq. Families would notice if their loved one was not included on the DoD website. It's to the great credit of medical personnel in Iraq that they have been able to save many who were critically injured.

10. I've always wondered that too
I've heard some people (DU'ers, journalists, etc.) mention the idea that those soldiers that die after they leave Iraq are not counted. But wouldn't family members notice this and raise hell? Just curious.

Oh, and I didn't mean to say that you were wrong on the number, just that the two sources I mentioned usually have a higher number than other sources. Not sure what the discrepancy is due to.

11. Thanks Mari!
Heard from your son (stepson?) lately? Hopefully he will be near a computer lab or Iraqi internet cafe (if that's what they call them there) and you can talk on instant messenger. It helps sooo much!

The good news is... my husband will be back in the states late March (or so they say).

no he wrote the other day and said he is on a blackout and wont write for a while so we have been waiting to hear from him..we have no idea what hes doing, its very disconcerting, we try not to think the worst, and just think he will come home okay and in one piece.
He said he would call when he had a chance..I guess we will miss his B day and Easter with him and he is there now for over a year..last we heard he was guarding a prison just outside of Baghdad.
one day at a time.

5. I see this thread every evening - I don't want to open it
But I did tonight. Haiti may have something to do w/it. I am soooo relieved none of my family members are involved in this 'war'. They have been involved in every other one since we arrived.

6. they are also LYING about the wounded!!
Edited on Fri Feb-27-04 09:22 PM by Mari333
The true extent of US casualties in Iraq are still unknown. This has fuelled suspicion that the administration may be hiding the true human cost of the war and its aftermath. Channel Four News has been allowed a rare opportunity to meet some of America's wounded soldiers.

In a dark corner of Andrews Air Force base on the outskirts of Washington DC, America's war-wounded come home.

The human cost of humbling tyrants.

No ceremony, no big welcome.

More than 11,000 medical evacuees have come through Andrews in the past nine months, the Air Force says.

Most, we suspect, from Iraq. But that's 8,000 more than the Pentagon says have been wounded there.
