New Paltz, NY joining Frisco in gay marriages starting at noon today
NEW PALTZ, N.Y., Feb 27 — Barry Nevins and his partner have been together as a couple for more than four years, and even exchanged rings and vows on a Caribbean cruise trip.

But today, angered by President Bush's call this week for a constitutional amendment banning gay marriages, they hoped to take their relationship one step further in New Paltz, N.Y., where the mayor, Jason West, performed marriage ceremonies for same-sex couples today.

By the way, the mayor's a Green. :)
Pretty neat huh?

3. People may not know
New Paltz is in the vicinity of what has come to be known as the Gay Catskills. A huge number of wealthy gay couples from NYC have purchased summer homes in the region. It really is one of the most promising sights you'll ever see, with a "typical conservative" population presenting, for the most part, open arms to their new neighbors. Take a trip to this region and you'd be unable to believe that Bush's despicable constitutional amendment could ever pass. Seriously; it's heartwarming.

4. Nice college town.
A friend of mine goes to SUNY New Paltz and I've gone up to visit a few times. It's a nice area. Very gay-friendly too, so it's not surprising. Still, it's nice to see my home state getting into the action. Bloomberg's too much of a putz to try that down here in the city but at least this will put some pressure on that moron Pataki.

Something tells me Chelsea's going to be empty this weekend. :)

9. Yay!!
I read a short opinion piece in last week's NY Daily News that pointed out that NYS law doesn't not use the words husband or wife in the law, but rather spouse and I understand that is the legal basis for this action. It's about time, too. Think about the renaissance Niagara Falls could have!

Also, pretty please don't call San Francisco "Frisco." It's like nails on a chalkboard to many folks. Thanks.

10. We are 351st on the waiting list for New Paltz
There are 350 couples ahead of us! My partner called my brother to invite him and he called back five minutes later saying, "The mayor of Niagara Falls just announced that they will start marrying gay couples. So you guys can get married and have the entire family there!"

So now the event has grown from four people to about 50.

Yikes.

(The partner rushed out today and told the jeweler, "I want two platinum rings to go, we have to tie the knot before the state troopers get there!")
