Crowds voice displeasure (Shrub in Louisville)
Crowds voice displeasure

About 1,000 speak out on president

By JOSEPH GERTH
jgerth@courier-journal.com
The Courier-Journal

In all her 67 years, Ann Hall has never protested anything
— until President Bush came to Louisville yesterday.

Fed up with the president's positions on education, the
economy and a host of other issues, she went downtown
with a couple of friends to voice her displeasure.

"He cares nothing about the common person," said Hall, of
Louisville. "We decided we're just tired of it, and we needed
to do something."

So, carrying a sign that referred to the president as an "idiot,"
she; Lori Eisenbeis, 68; and Midge Ostendorf, 72, took their
place among 1,000 or more protesters who gathered half a
block from the Galt House. Sprinkled among the crowd was
a handful supporting Bush.

1. Yes, because they are herded to a "free speech zone"
Away from the actual place the President is actually speaking at...conveniently away from the media and the cameras.

30. I just had an idea
Since the "speech zones" are out of bush's view why don't we protest at the local TV station?
Y'know, arrive a couple hours before the bush event, picket to prevent the remote TV van from getting out of the parking area.
The objective of protest is to be seen and heard. If the media won't look at protesters, the protesters can move to a spot where the media can't avoid seeing them.

And throw you in jail for two years without the ability to see your family or an attorney.

You should send this to Moveon.org or some other group which will be protesting Bush at the NYC Imperial Convention.

48. Free speech zone
"As he traveled to his $2,000-a-plate fund-raiser at the Galt House, Bush never got closer to the protesters than half a city block. They were restricted to the south side of Main Street between Third and Fourth streets.

"About 30 officers from the Louisville Metro Police and the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office were stationed near the intersection — along with mounted police — to watch the protesters. Two officers filmed the crowd, and another took still pictures.

"But the downtown protest, and another smaller one near ISCO Industries on East Chestnut Street where Bush visited, both were peaceful and there were no arrests, police spokesman Dwight Mitchell said.

"The downtown protest had centered near Fourth and Main until several protesters noticed Bush's approaching motorcade. They rushed toward Third Street, but were stopped by police before they reached the motorcade."

Unfortunately this pattern is repeated in practically every city that Bush and/or Cheney visit. The cops and the SS are in cahoots to avoid direct eye contact between Bush and the protesters.

58. Videos and photos.....
Why? So they can "Identify Trouble-makers", that's why.

Everyone who was there now has a file open on them. Might not mention you by name, but the cops have footage of you holding your "Where are the JOBS???" sign....

Does KY have digitized photos on driver's licenses? If so, they can find names to go with the faces.

34. Which ain't saying much.
Edited on Fri Feb-27-04 03:19 PM by Why
Louisville is my hometown, and I can tell you they ain't exactly liberal. The south end and west end might be majority Democratic, but the east end and the suburban areas beyond the Snyder Freeway are like Anaheim with a Dixie accent. There is a reason the Republicans have nearly completely taken over, and that's because Louisville can be carved up into enough pieces to prevent a Democrat from ever winning there.

Edit: I try really hard to avoid discussing my politics when I'm down there, but if my idiot dittohead brother doesn't bring it up, my Goldwater Republican dad will.

45. Just a small correction
I'm from Anaheim. It used to be very white and very conservative, but not anymore. I moved about 15 years, but still live near by. Anaheim has had a lot of white flight to south orange county and yorba linda.

Loretta Sanchez is the rep for the part of anaheim I grew up in, replacing B1 Bob Dornan.

I lived there for 20 years! And the Courier Journal is a great newspaper.

On the other hand, ninety miles away, Cincinnati is ultra-conservative.

47. Louisville passed a gay rights ordinance
a few years ago, after several unsuccessful attempts, when a prominent local Baptist charity fired a staff person simply because they learned she was a lesbian. (They were very direct in acknowledging that this was the reason for her dismissal.) This pretty much blew the argument out of the water that gays don't need "special protections".

Ironically, the ordinance has an exemption for religiously-based organizations that would have allowed the charity to fire their gay employee. But it's far better than nothing. I suppose a city whose major industries include whiskey and horse racing is not too uptight about people's personal lives.

55. Rise of the Creative Class
In the book, The Rise of the Creative Class, the acclaimed analysis of what makes successful cities tick, author Richard Florida makes a special point of crediting cultural mixes that include a thriving gay community. National reports have indicated that many city revitalization efforts are using Florida's overall conclusions as part of their model.

At 75, my grandmother, who had difficulty walking, would bring a lawn chair and sit outside of Pat Robertson's CBN in Virginia Beach holding a placard while other protesters marched around. The issue at that time was CBN's support for the Contras in Nicaragua.

7. That's great! What a dip that woman from Atlanta is.
"I think they are an embarrassment," she said of the protesters, belittling some of the labor union protesters who carried signs opposing Bush's overtime policy. "That guy is worried about overtime. Why isn't he on the job right now?"

She thinks it's embarrassing to see real Democracy in Action?

Had she even considered that those people used their own personal vacation time to protest this disaster called Smirk?

I suppose she was "on the job" while blowing kisses to Dim Son's limo.

This is great...he can't go ANYWHERE without hearing the boos! Isn't Kentucky Red?

does the louisville police dept REALLY want to billy club and mace middle-aged union folk and grandmothers? that's mayor jerry abramson's worst nightmare.

also, if the cops are photographing and taping protesters, why don't the protesters cover their faces? or wear bush masks. makes for better political theater and might get the even mentioned on the news.
