Granholm to be at White House on Tuesday
Source: Detroit Free Press

WASHINGTON – Gov. Jennifer Granholm will visit the White House on Tuesday amid speculation that she’s on President Barack Obama’s short list to fill a vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court but a senior administration official says the event is unrelated to the spot on the court.

What the event is and who else will be in attendance were not immediately revealed.

The Associated Press reported last week that Granholm’s name was on a short list to replace Supreme Court Justice David Souter, who is retiring. There were five other names on that list though the AP reported there may be more names under consideration.

Granholm’s staff has refused to comment on speculation that she might be under consideration for the job. A Harvard law school grad, Granholm was state attorney general before becoming governor. Unlike the other current members of the court, she does not have judicial experience.

Yeah, "unrelated" - just a coincidence.

I have said it here on DU many times - this is your nominee, and it's a brilliant pick.

3. Good choice. Now if only we could impeach Roberts.
He is ten times more partisan than Scalia and Thomas and will be on the court for decades.

5. I think it's Granholm.
Obama's admiration for Earl Warren has been expressed many times. A governor without judicial experience? Hmmmmm. . . .

Updated at 1:24 p.m.

WASHINGTON — Gov. Jennifer Granholm will be at the White House Tuesday for a meeting on setting a national fuel standard for automobiles, according to a person familiar with the meeting who was not authorized to speak publicly about it.

Word of the meeting came as Politico.com reported on its Web site that President Barack Obama planned to announce his plans for a new national fuel economy standard Tuesday.

According to Politico, the administration plans to bring together auto companies, state governments, the Environmental Protection Agency and the federal Transportation Department for the talks.

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger was also expected to attend.

A senior administration official who would not comment on the topic of the meeting said earlier today that Granholm would be coming to the White House on Tuesday. The Associated Press reported last week that Granholm is on Obama’s short list to fill a vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court but the official – who wouldn’t be identified because the meeting and its topic had not yet been made public – said the meeting was unrelated to the Supreme Court.

7. Well, the main issue may be fuel standards but...
they could discuss the Supreme Court position too. Granholm has been mentioned for many positions in the Obama administration and she has always said she is happy with her job as governor and has the intention of finishing her term. Now, she and her spokesperson are refusing to comment. A reporter at channel 7 news said she cut an interview short once the topic came up. Clearly, she is under consideration. I think she will be the pick.

8. Agreed. C'mon, folks, there are no coincidences in politics.
She's the pick. And a brilliant move by Obama. She will be a justice in the tradition of Warren and Brennan. A consensus builder, and a game changer.

10. Wednesday. The president won't drag this out.
It will be Granholm, and it will be Wednesday.

David Souter will be missed. One of the great justices in the history of the Court.

11. 1:57 PM -- AP reports Obama will issue new vehicle emission standards on Tuesday
Obama set to release new vehicle emission standards
by Ken Thomas | The Associated Press
Monday May 18, 2009, 1:57 PM

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama will issue new vehicle emission standards and pair them with a broader goal of reducing pollution, marking the first time limits on greenhouse gases will be linked to federal standards for cars and trucks.

Officials familiar with the administration's discussions say Obama will unveil the new standards on Tuesday. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the official announcement had not been made.

California, 13 other states and the District of Columbia have urged the federal government to let them enact more stringent standards than the federal government's requirements. The states' regulations would cut greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent in new cars and trucks by 2016.

Officials said Tuesday's announcement moves toward the 30 percent goal by 2016, starting with model years 2011 and beyond.

13. If Granholm is a "brilliant" pic . . . and I haven't read very much about her ...
hope Obama goes for it --

but I doubt he's going to use his mandate to set us up with any strong -- anti-corporate --

liberal . . .

We'll see --

My crystal ball says, he do something that will -- sadly/sigh -- please the Repugs ...
