Democratic contenders bash Bush on Haiti
1 hour, 14 minutes ago

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Candidates for the Democratic presidential nomination bashed President George W. Bush (news - web sites)'s handling of the Haiti crisis, accusing him of giving legitimacy to the anti-government rebels.

"We are in this place because this is so typical of this president's disengagement in this entire hemisphere," Senator John Edwards (news - web sites) of North Carolina said in a candidate's debate here sponsored by CNN television.

"He's done it all over the world. The reason we're in this place is because this president has not been involved, not been engaged."

Front-running candidate Senator John Kerry (news - web sites) of Massachusetts said the Bush administration has "a theological and a identifilogical hatred" for Haitian President Jean Bertrand Aristide.

2. Bush is hardly disengaged in Haiti.
He sent Otto Reich down there to give the "rebels" their marching orders and reassure them that we would help them overthrow yet another democratically elected government in the Americas. Edwards is either missing the point or deliberately obfuscating what is actually going down.

5. Thank you.
I was watching the debate last night, and Edwards' comments were way off the mark. I'm leaning toward deliberate obfuscation.

Kerry says U.S. fueled conflict in Haiti

John Kerry is pointing to the worsening crisis in Haiti as an example of failed Bush administration foreign policy.

BY PETER WALLSTEN

pwallsten@herald.com

Democratic presidential front-runner John Kerry accused President Bush's administration Thursday of fomenting conflict in Haiti out of ideological opposition to President Jean-Bertrand Aristide.

Kerry called on Bush to name Florida Sen. Bob Graham, one-time rival for the Democratic nomination, to be a special envoy to the Caribbean nation to negotiate a peaceful resolution between Aristide and the rebels threatening to oust him from power.

Debating his Democratic rivals Thursday night in Los Angeles, Kerry accused the White House of withholdnig aid to Haiti until the opposition reached a power-sharing agreement with Aristide -- an approach that he said ensured the rebels would keep fighting.

''This administration has been engaged in very manipulative and wrongful ways,'' Kerry said. ``They have a theological and an ideological hatred for Aristide. They always have. They approached this so the insurgents were empowered by this administration.''

4. If one believes in Democracy they should speak up
Remember in a Democracy you don't replace a leader by armed insurrection. It is done through the ballot. These thugs in Haiti know they would never get elected so they are using force. Bush* just sits on his ass because he doesn't believe in Democracy. He believes in entitlement and figures that the wealthy land barons are entitled and besides they are white and Aristide and the people are black.
