Broadcasters Promise To Curtail Indecency

A day after the nation's largest radio chain suspended shock jock Howard Stern, broadcasters sought to convince Capitol Hill lawmakers that they're serious about limiting indecency on the airwaves without a congressional crackdown.

Under questioning, Clear Channel Radio president and chief executive John Hogan acknowledged yesterday that the bawdy content of Stern's show has been going on for years, but he said the company has taken a new approach amid heightened scrutiny of the issue in recent weeks.

"I don't think he has changed his tune, but we have changed ours," Hogan said. "We are going in a different direction. . . . That sort of inappropriate material does not have a place on our air."

Hogan's statement came amid more than three hours of testimony before the House telecommunications and Internet subcommittee by representatives of some of the nation's largest broadcast outlets, who came to the hearing armed with profuse apologies and vows to better control sex and violence on radio and television.

This agency has been clueless and wilfully toothless while every sort of lie and character assassination has been spewed 24/7 by Talk Radio.

It has chosen to allow so-called "news" shows to slant their content heavily in favor of bu$h. It has turned a deliberately-blind eye toward fewer corporations owning more outlets.

It has long ignored its own policy that the airwaves are public property.

Why, all of a sudden, has Michael Powell's FCC decided to get tough on "indecency?" Couldn't have anything to do with election-year politics, could it??
