Torricelli guilty in fender-bender

WEST AMWELL, N.J. (AP) -- Former U.S. Sen. Robert Torricelli was found guilty Thursday of leaving the scene of a parking lot fender-bender accident last summer.

Torricelli was fined $200 and his driver's license was suspended for six months, although he has 20 days to appeal before the suspension takes effect. Torricelli attorney Jeffrey Weinstein said an appeal would be filed.

A municipal court judge ruled that the former Democratic U.S. Senator was behind the wheel of a sport utility vehicle when it bumped into another car in a small-town grocery store parking lot.

Torricelli, 52, of Delaware Township, denied that he was driving the SUV. His ex-wife, Susan Holloway, testified that she was driving at the time of the accident and that Torricelli was a passenger in the vehicle.

1. Nice try, but...
Torricelli('s)...ex-wife, Susan Holloway, testified that she was driving at the time of the accident and that Torricelli was a passenger in the vehicle...

"My conclusion is that Sen. Torricelli was in fact driving the car, due to the fact that we have two eyewitnesses," Municipal Court Judge Richard Cushing said.

Torricelli said...there is no way the witnesses could have seen inside his vehicle to determine who was driving because the windows are tinted...

Torricelli and his ex-wife said they knew their vehicle banged into the other car, but they checked for damages and saw none.

Well, duh, if they GOT OUT OF THE CAR to check for damages, then maybe the two witnesses noticed which of them got out through the driver's door!

5. He's not out of politics
He is a top fundraiser for John Kerry and was a leader in the anti-Dean movement in the party. He is still a involved in national democratic politics due to his fundraising ability because of his time as chair of the DSCC. Plus, it is just intersting to see what a jackass Torricelli is, because he is and certainly was a very powerful politician.

4. Bad move to contest the charge. He should have let his attorney
discretely amend the charge to something less onerous. And he should have promised to take the obligatory defensive driving course that the National Safety Council teaches.

Torecelli's mistake: hubris.
