Kerry blasts Walmart
Moving the theme back to jobs and health care, Kerry brought up the Supermarket strike in CA, and slammed Walmart for hiring part timers purposely so as not to grant health insurance and other benefits that the other chains provide.

Way to go!!!

1. Go Kerry!!!

This IS an important issue. Everyone should look at Wal-Mart for an example of how American workers will be treated under global feudalism.

BTW, Kudos to Meijer for accepting union representation in SOME of their stores. I hope they ramp up efforts to distinguish themselves from Wal-Mart by providing more American goods in shop!!!!

13. I was thinking the same thing. Now if he could only diss NAFTA...
Kerry is the only candidate to really make a statement about taking Diebold voting results to court before the election actually happens. That made my nipples stand up. He's, in general, too wishy-washy for me on most issues.

ABB gets my money and vote this November.

26. The NAFTA and Walmart relationship
Kerry should know, Walmart goods are mostly imports. Globalization, the WTO and NAFTA enable warehouse retail like Walmart. 'Walmart vs Main Street' job losses are related to other job losses that have resulted from international trade agreements like NAFTA. Walmart is just the tip of the iceberg.

10. Here are his 2002 Personal Financial Disclosure for John Kerry
http://www.opensecrets.org/pfds/pfd2002/N00000245_2002.pdf

According to Senator John Kerry's personal
financial disclosure forms filed in 2003 he has
between 1,000,000 and 5,000,000 invested in
WalMart stock.

Also included in his investment portfolio:

Over 1,000,000 in Gannett Newpapers
Over 1,000,000 in Pfizer
Between 15,000 and 50,000 in Exxon Mobil
Between 15,000 and 50,000 in Proctor and Gamble Company
Another 15,000 to 50,000 listed as Proctor and Gamble (w/o "company")

Honest info is not bashing.

15. How is documented info defending anyone.
The poster I replied to asked for a link. I supplied it. If you have a problem with John Kerry's own legal record of legal holdings, take it up with him.

I don't need to be careful as long as I am accurate.

There are some bashers among us. :)

20. Even a stopped clock is right twice a day.
In this case "lefty" him on a legitimate concern. I don't see how you can bash a company when you hold so large a share of stack and cash the dividend checks every time they come in. Either you are pricipled and divest or 2-faced.

The Kerrys, for example, own shares in retailer Walmart, the scourge of fair-wage activists; Monsanto, the leader in genetically modified foods; nearly a dozen pharmaceuticals companies, such as Pfizer, which Democrats have attacked over high drug prices; and large oil companies, such as ExxonMobil, which go against environmentalists' support for renewable energy.

much more at the link

24. Much more such as
A list of the Kerrys' assets, which runs to more than 60 pages, includes shares in companies from a variety of industries. Few of these appear to be as thorny as Ingersoll. Most are contained in his wife's trusts, over which Mr Kerry may have no control.

Why?

If he didn't point it out, I would have. Always follow the money. You learn a lot about a person by how they spend their money and how they get it.

18. Excuse me, but if Kerry spoke against Walmart and its actions,
even though his portfolio contains large stock in the company, then that is heroic rather than the opposite.

19. No, at best it is naive, at worst two-faced. If he divests it is heroic.
Divestment is how apartheid was ended not by investment in the companies enforcing it. It is blatant hypocrisy otherwise.

21. I'm with ya. Walmart is attractive to Wall St. because of their
policy of screwing workers and not giving benefits. If they were to change that business plan, their stock would tumble. Costco and BJ's are chastised by investors for not embracing the anti-employee policies of Walmart. Investors, including Kerry (if he does own stock in this company) are promoting this policy and getting the money that the employees don't.

Hey, unlike Kerry, I actually need the money but I sold my stock in Walmart when I learned what they were about. I won't shop there, either. It's more expensive that way, but sacrifice is a lost art in America. I'll take one for the team.

I hope Kerry does the right thing here.

27. Walmart is a Globalization beneficiary....
Walmart's policies toward its employees are not as detrimental as its participation in globalization. Once Walmart's low prices put local retailers out of business, not only will its prices be raised as capitalism commands, the means to reconstruct local economies are gone.

22. Walmart, Kmart, fast foods, etc. have been doing this for decades
I worked at Kmart and a couple of fast food places for summer jobs when I was in high school over a decade ago, and they were always very careful to never schedule anyone except the managers for more than 39.5 hours per week.

23. He should take his concerns to a shareholder meeting
An increasingly popular tactic among activists. If he is owns equity in WalMart in the amount of $5 million, he should attempt to influence the company's policies through either divestment or shareholder agitation. Of course, I'd also like too see him influence their despicable policies from a bully pulpit at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

It is quite clear what the charge will be against Kerry. They painted Gore as a "serial exaggerator" (a charge that was patently false), and now they are moving on Kerry as a "hypocrite." There are counter-moves, needless to say.
