Bush Lowers Bar for Congress on Extending Tax Cuts

By Adam Entous

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Reuters) - President Bush told Congress on Thursday he would settle for making some of his tax cuts permanent, those set to expire next year, after fellow Republicans warned the rest of his plan may have to wait until after the November election.

<snip>Without mentioning Democratic presidential front-runner John Kerry by name, Bush derided his political rival for opposing the extension of his 2001 and 2003 tax cuts at a cost of around $1 trillion over the next decade.

"That's code word for 'I'm going to raise your taxes,"' Bush told workers at an expanding pipe-making company.
<snip>

Bush signaled his top legislative priority was extending the child tax credit, tax breaks for married couples and the 10 percent tax bracket, all of which expire in 2005. That would be significantly less than his election-year pledge to make all of his tax cuts permanent. <snip>

"I would like Congress to make all tax cuts permanent," he added. "But (at) the very minimum -- the very minimum -- they need to listen to the stories up here on the stage and make those set to expire in 2005 permanent for the sake of our economy, for the sake of American families, for the sake of small business owners and for the sake of job creation." <snip>

1. You left out the best quote.
Bush: "We've got plenty of money in Washington D.C."

Are there any idiots out there that can actually read that and not LOL. We've got a $500 billion annual deficit. Fucking low-grade moron.

3. Tax Cuts without Spending Reductions are just TAX DEFERRALS
Just lowering taxes for the current generation while passing on the taxes to the unborn - GOP selfishness.

4. Plus interest which makes it a tax INcrease to children and grandchildren.
Hopefully those workers on stage know the difference between trickle down and being pissed on.

6. true - but how do Dems oppose - or why should they oppose child
credit or 10% bracket, or 2 worker family penalty reduction.

Indeed if we are as ineffective as we usually are, then making the good parts of the tax cut permanent now screws the GOP out of the chance to hold these hostage as the rich folk tax cut crap expires and they want to renew it!

7. Kerry is not going to raise those workers taxes and Bush didn't lower them
When ever bush talks about tax cuts he is speaking about the wealthy but the worker chumps don't understand that. When he says a Dem is going to raise taxes he means raising taxes of the wealthy but the worker chumps don't understand that.

It is the working class repubs that are taking it in the pocketbook but they keep on voting for the party that is screwing them.

I think it was Truman who said that if you want to live like a Republican vote for a Democrat.

9. Are Republicans truly stupid enough to buy this??
OK, so they've been hoodwinked by these rapacious scoundrels, but are they truly stupid enough to be raped yet one more time?
