Michael Savage to sue British government
Source: BBC

A US radio talk show host says he will sue the British government for defamation after being placed on a list of people banned from entering the UK.

Conservative political commentator Michael Savage, real name Michael Alan Weiner, is one of 22 people barred for fostering extremism or hate.

He told his radio audience that he was intending to sue British Home Secretary Jacqui Smith, who he described as the "lunatic ... Home Secretary of England".

"To link me up with skinheads who are killing people in Russia, to put me in league with Hamas murderers who kill people on buses is defamation," he said. In an article posted on his website, he said he did not advocate violence but "traditional values".

1. His real name is WEINER?!
Edited on Wed May-06-09 05:04 AM by Atman
It's very telling that he chose "Savage" as his working name...but he'll always be just a weiner.

Oh, one more thing Mr. Weiner...hate is not a traditional value.

That's the only thing I want to know.

I'm sure Her Majesty's government will know how to deal with this lawsuit.

3. Hope this serves as a wake-up call to hate radio. That it comes with a cost
and what they are doing might slide by in the USA but Europe knows what happens when you take people too far to the right. And they won't put up with it.

54. Slippery Slope
I agree that he spews some very vile words but there if you limit speech from a right winger then its sets a precedent for when the next righty government (as much as it may seem improbable, at some point in the future, there will be a right leaning government) comes into power to limit lefties. The righies will use it and try to silence anyone of opposing views.

57. If the U.S. government tried to banish him to England...
You'd have a point. That's not what is happening. England has its own laws and Republicans do not think "European" laws should have any influence on U.S. laws. Therefore our laws should not have any influence on theirs (har-har, says the world's moral police).

Dead issue.

Throw Weiner in prison for a year, then deport him. After Mikey arrives home, the British send him a bill for his room and board during his stay as a guest at one of England's intuitions.

18. Part of the background to this
is the associated problems with deporting someone once they're here. Hence the policy - keep the fuckers out in the first place. If he did fly in he'd be turned round at the airport whatever as was the Dutch guy a few weeks back.

If you had our laws in the USA there would be far less grief with the hate spewed out by your radio stations etc. whether it be in connection with religion, race / colour / ethnic background or sexual preference.

If I had my way I'd include people who tell inane jokes about banjos too. :)

to start spending money for lawyers. He should be encouraged to go forth and sue. He should have his listeners send all their money for his legal fees as this money could be used to get right wing lunatics elected. Attention conservatives: Michael Savage needs your money to fight the evil British Empire. This is an extension of the tea party. Send all your money to Savage Weiner.

Somebody with a stronger stomach than mine could probably go through Savage's past rantings and find praise for such exclusions and for the no-fly lists.

The next Hypocrisy Bowl will pit Savage against Governor Rick "Let me secede but help me fight swine flu first" Perry. Up in the booth, doing color commentary for Fox, will be some of the Bushbots in Congress who are now denouncing federal deficits.

55. "Michael Savage tells his listeners to boycott Britain"
Source: The Times

Mike Harvey in San Francisco, Richard Ford and Frances Gibb
The American “shock jock” radio host Michael Savage, who was included on a Home Office list of 16 people banned from entering the country, last night urged his listeners to boycott Britain.

He told his audience that Americans should not travel to Britain or buy British goods, and delivered a personal message to Jacqui Smith, the Home Secretary, who made the decision to include him on the list of unwanted foreigners: “Unless you remove my name forthwith, unless you admit you made a mistake, I will bring a major libel suit against you personally and I will win.”

Mr Savage opened fire on the Home Secretary on the conservative news website WorldNetDaily , where he said that his message to her and the British people was: “Shame on you. Shame that you’ve fallen to such a low level.”

“It’s interesting to me that here I am, a talk show host who does not advocate violence, who advocates patriotic traditional values — borders, language, culture — who is now on a list banned in England.

64. Used to be, you could not sue "the King," aka the British government. Wiki says
that was drastically altered in 1946. I have trouble believing it was altered so much that the UK can be sued over its immigration policies, but who knows?

American judges can impose penalties upon people who bring frivolous lawsuit and THEIR LAWYERS, which really helps make lawyers more careful about which dumb cases they fly into court with. I imagine the UK has the same, but who knows?
