Dave Bing headed to stunning victory
Edited on Tue May-05-09 09:23 PM by Faygo Kid
Source: Detroit Free Press

Businessman and former NBA star Dave Bing headed tonight to victory over Detroit Mayor Ken Cockrel Jr. with 99% of precincts reporting.

Bing has 52% of the votes with 48,450 votes to Cockrel’s 44,175 or 48% of the votes.

The mood was quickly souring at Cockrel's party as word of Bing's strong lead spread.

Deputy Mayor Saul Green struggled to muster a smile before a TV interview. Detroit political consultant Adolph Mongo, who supported Cockrel in the race, said there was no way Cockrel could come back. . .

I remember when he was drafted. Detroiters wanted Cazzie Russell out of U-M, but Bing's in the NBA Hall of Fame, and was named one of the NBA's Best 50 Players of All Time. Anyway, he seems dedicated to the city, and appears to be an honest man. Big improvement over Kwame Kilpatrick; if he's another Dennis Archer, the city and region will be well served.

Let's hope that he can bring Detroit back. No great American city deserves to die like this one is.

9. Yeah, I know. But Bing was better.
My sports hero growing up was Al Kaline.

And I miss the Bird, although I was in my mid-20s by then. RIP.

15. Well...maybe not so old. LOL
Bing and I were born the same year. I actually remember the Fort Wayne Pistons.

As a former Clevelander and lifelong Indian fan, Kaline was definitely on my "boo" list. LOL !

22. Detroit hasn't had a Republican mayor since BEFORE
Coleman A. Young. You'd have to know the 'history' behind Young's tenure as mayor to understand WHY Detroit has been overwhelmingly democratic since the 1967 riot.

20. Won't Make Any Difference
It really doesn't matter who is elected Mayor of Detroit. The situation there is completely hopeless. There needs to be a comprehensive national resettlement program in the United States. There is absolutely no way that cities comprised of hundreds of thousands of impoverished people, primarily minorities, segregated and concentrated in one dilapidated and deteriorating place, will ever succeed. This situation is a national crime and shame and NOT ONE LEADER in either political party is serious about solving it.

you moving those darn minorities onto a reservation or something?

Moving them won't change the poverty, you'll just move the poverty.
