Fall Vaccination Campaign May Include 3 Flu Shots
Source: Washington Post

The Obama administration is considering an unprecedented fall vaccination campaign that could entail giving Americans three flu shots -- one to combat annual seasonal influenza and two targeted at the new swine flu sweeping across the globe this month.

The multi-billion-dollar effort would represent the first time that federal health leaders have asked Americans to get more than one flu vaccine in a single year, raising serious challenges around production, distribution and the ability to track potentially severe side effects.

Experts in and out of the administration are now evaluating a raft of complicated issues, including who ought to receive an innoculation against the swine flu and whether private vaccine makers can simultaneously manufacture the standard 180 million doses and up to 600 million rounds of the new vaccine.

"We are moving forward with making a vaccine," said Dr. Robin Robinson, a director with the Department of Health and Human Services who oversees pandemic response programs. Robinson said while a formal decision has not been made about the swine flu vaccine, if the government goes ahead, it would likely produce two doses for all Americans. If the pandemic diminishes, he said, health officials could decide to produce doses for only a portion of the population.

7. Do you actually think I'd try to prevent others from getting
the shots? Where on earth did you get that idea?

I worry about vaccines that are developed too quickly, that's all.

31. More info on companies, please
Are there particular companies you would avoid? I am 69, hubby 70, and we always get flu shots. Three flu shots, however, makes me a little nervous. Son is a doc and I will get his opinion on this in the fall and also the various companies to avoid if any, but would appreciate your opinion since you posted this.

25. Hey - it worked for the MMR
My (adopted) brother and sister got the pre-release version when they were in foster care after their birth parents abandoned them. Don't know if they do that anymore, but at the time the MMR vaccine was being developed they absolutely used the most vulnerable population as guinea pigs before releasing it for general use.

21. I get my flu shot at the county health department.
It is very inexpensive. Those who are low income get a reduced price. I am not sure if anyone gets a free shot. I have not checked.

14. As Dems we like personal choice. It's not nice to scare the sheeple.
My personal choice: PASS. I've never had a flu shot and don't intend to getting scared into getting one now. The sky is not falling and I remember the swine flu vaccine from 1976.

16. someone I know almost died from the Swine Flu shots in 1976
it was required by the company that said person worked for at the time. He almost died from it and is permanently disabled today.

They can take their damn shots and shove 'em.

27. I am not passing based upon being a tough guy, but from experience and knowledge.
If I have ever had the flu it was such a mild case that I thought it was only a bad cold. Being nearly 57 I was exposed to a cousin of this current flu strain in the early '50s and again in the '70s. If, or when we do have a real pandemic I wonder if people will be burned out from the cry wolf pandemics. We must remember that in a normal flu season 36000 people die in this country from the flu and that makes this current "pandemic" look like a case of the sniffles.

22. Despite the all is well meme
they must be really worried about what may happen in the fall. I can't take the flu vaccine due to a health condition but if we have a really high case fatality rate in the fall if this thing does a 1918 I would take it.

32. They are very worried
that the H1N1 'swine' flu virus will mutate by fall combining with another flu virus and come back very strong. This is what it did before, in 1918 I think they said. That is the fear now. All these flu viruses are different- hubby had the flu shot last year and then got another kind of flu. They gave him Tamiflu, which you have to take immediately after the first symptoms. It worked beautifully, but very expensive.

38. I will be at the front of the line.
I am on Day 12 of the standard, non-swine-variety flu. It has kicked my little hiney.

Mrs. Robb got her shot this year, recommended due to her pregnancy. And she is smugly healthy.

There is risk to everything, but compared to two weeks of not being able to lift my head, I think it's a reasonable risk here.
