Cowboys' scouting assistant paralyzed(from Practice Facility Collapse)
Source: Dallas Morning News

The Cowboys issued a release moments ago updating the status of three people that were taken to the hospital after their indoor practice facility collapsed.

Rich Behm, a scouting assistant, sustained a fracture to the thoracic spine that caused a severing of his spinal cord and permanent paralysis from the waist down. He underwent surgery Saturday night and remains at Parkland Hospital in stable condition.

Behm moved from the team's video department to scouting a few years ago and worked closely with Chris Hall, the team's college scouting coordinator, and director of college and pro scouting Tom Ciskowski.

Owner and general manager Jerry Jones and coach Wade Phillips spent a large part of Saturday night/Sunday morning with the Behm family. More coaches and players visited the hospital today.

That's a shame. Those kind of facilities need to be permanent structures.

2. It was mentioned that two Cowboy's personnel were up near top
filming the practice and basically fell 3 stories when the structure collapsed. He was probably one of the two.

This is status of other two serious injuries.

The release also stated special teams coach Joe DeCamillis will undergo surgery Monday for a fracture of one of his cervical vertebrae. He is in stable condition without paralysis at Parkland Hospital.

Assistant athletic trainer Greg Gaither had surgery Saturday to repair a fracture of his right tibia and fibula at Baylor University Medical Center. He should be released later this week.

3. Saw the film on the news (two guys were videotaping the practice for the coaches). looked bad
After the tent collapsed you could see people lying motionless. It happened because the wind started blowing really hard.

4. Speculation is that it was a microburst
A few years ago a woman at amusement park near me in Pittsburgh area was killed when a structure collapsed on her and a number of people were injured in the park. The damage area was limited but it was incredible the damage done to local homes in area with roofs torn off, brick porches torn away, etc. It was determined to be a microburst.

11. Yep it was a Kennywood
Edited on Sun May-03-09 09:37 PM by RamboLiberal
Wow I can't believe its already been 7 years since it happened. Time flies I think as one gets older.

Here's the story. BTW the park was sold last year to a Spanish firm. No longer family run. This story is from 2002.

A ride known as one of the mildest in Kennywood Park became the scene of death and horror last night.

The wooden pavilion that shelters the Whip ride collapsed about 7 p.m. as storms tore through the region.

Up to 100 people were trapped beneath its timbers, including a 30-year-old Monroeville woman, Stephanie Wilkerson, who died at the scene.

At least 54 other people were injured.

West Mifflin officials said the woman was crushed between the pavilion and a wrought-iron fence.

5. This is so sad. Stem cell research needs to be advanced to help people
that have been injured like this.

Yes, it looks like a microburst did it, although there had been heavy wind gusts, almost to hurricane strength, at that time.

6. Just think how far along stem cell research would be
If only Bush hadn't been against it for 8 long, miserable years.

That poor man...what a horrible, horrible thing to happen!!

7. That just terrible
I can't stand the Cowboys, but I would not wish this even on my worst enemy. My sympathies go out to the Behm family

12. Same here - makes me glad the Steelers built a solid
indoor training facility along with their outdoor training field on the South Side of Pittsburgh.

8. This hits close to home
Our son had a severe spinal fracture along with other injuries four years ago. His cord injury was incomplete so, while the doctors and therapists prepared him for life in a wheelchair, they wouldn't rule out some recovery. He spent two years in a chair and has fought back to walking without crutches. Next month he will be walking up to collect his college diploma. Through all of this, we have looked at all the cures that might have been available without a heartless political hack masquerading as president blocking science to pander to the few who still supported him. This young man's chances would be a whole lot better if the treatment was available now and not years in the future.

14. Does Texas have lax building codes?
If so, then it's another reason to kick Rick Perry out of office.

15. It was a huge tarp...
bubble. Kind of like thick, thick, canvas. Jerry Jones could afford much better than this:eyes:

They shouldn't have even been in that thing with the bad weather we had that day.
