Iran hangs woman convicted of murder as a minor
Source: AP

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran has hanged a young woman who was convicted of murder when she was a minor, her lawyer said Saturday, drawing condemnation from international human rights groups who have sought to end capital punishment for juvenile offenders.

Authorities executed the 23-year-old woman Friday in northern Iran without informing her lawyer or allowing the family to be present, said the lawyer, Mohammad Mostafaei. She was 17 at the time the crime was committed, in 2003.

Iran executes more juvenile offenders than any other nation — eight last year and 42 since 1990, according to Amnesty International. Friday's was the second such execution this year in Iran, Mostafaei said.

While a few other countries are known to have executed juvenile offenders in recent years — Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Sudan and Pakistan — Iran has accounted for more than two-thirds of such executions in the past four years, according to rights groups.

2. In the US, there have been 22 executions of juveniles since 1976, 13 of them in Texas.
Quite a sorry state of affairs.

I do not believe any of them were young women though.

18. Well, not much other than this:
"She initially confessed to the crime but later insisted that her boyfriend carried out the murder to steal the 65-year-old woman's money. The boyfriend persuaded her to confess, she claimed, by convincing her she would not be executed because of her age."

According to this, she was either a murderer or an accessory to murder who confessed to murder.

My list was simply the list of nations that execute children taken directly from the OP.

And what do you think my unnamed country was?

You should hide your ignorance better.

11. This is her story:

............The U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child, which Iran has signed, bans capital punishment for offenders who committed crimes before their 18th birthday.

"Iran continues to deny that it executes juvenile offenders, but the secret nature of this execution demonstrates that the government knows that these killings are illegal and shameful in the eyes of the world," said Zama Coursen-Neff, deputy director of the children's rights division at Human Rights Watch.

The prisoner executed Friday, Delara Darabi, initially pleaded guilty to killing her father's cousin, but later retracted her confession and said her boyfriend carried out the killing. She told a judge that she had initially confessed because her boyfriend told her that, as a minor, she would not be executed and she could save him from being put to death, her lawyer said.

Her boyfriend, who was 19 at the time of the killing, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for complicity in murder.

41. Hmm...shows you how highly they think of women there.
"Her boyfriend, who was 19 at the time of the killing, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for complicity in murder."

It would make sense if the boyfriend received the same punishment, but no, he'll be released to go manipulate some other young girl into another tragic situation.

26. The U.S. government has killed far more minors than the Iranian government,
the primary difference being that they are almost always in another country. Is the United States a "piece of shit country" also, or is the number of victims not a criterion for such a ranking?

19. Omar Khadr
Omar Ahmed Khadr (born September 19, 1986) is the fourth child in the Canadian Khadr family. He was captured by American forces at the age of 15 following a four-hour firefight with militants in the village of Ayub Kheyl, Afghanistan.<1> He has spent six years in the Guantanamo Bay detention camps charged with war crimes and providing support to terrorism after allegedly throwing a grenade that killed a US soldier.<2>

A Canadian citizen born in Toronto,<3><4> he is the youngest prisoner held in the Guantanamo Bay detention camp by the United States and has been frequently referred to as a child soldier.<5><6> The only Western citizen remaining in Guantanamo, Khadr is unique in that Canada has refused to seek extradition or repatriation despite the urgings of Amnesty International, UNICEF, the Canadian Bar Association and other prominent organisations.<7><8><9><10> In April 2009, the Federal Court of Canada ruled that international law made it obligatory for the government to immediately demand Khadr's return.<11>

Khadr was the only person charged under the 2006 Military Commissions Act who did not boycott the Guantanamo proceedings.<12> In February 2008, the Pentagon accidentally released documents that revealed that although Khadr was present during the firefight, there was no other evidence that he had thrown the grenade. In fact, military officials had originally reported that another of the surviving militants had thrown the grenade just before being killed.<13>

So it's entirely possible that she did NOT kill anyone and she was still executed??

They want 11 year-olds sentenced to life without parole and preferably raped when they arrive at prison.

There's a big DU torture and rape contingent, and they make themselves well heard anytime some crime manages to get into the newspaper.
