Rumsfeld Says Osama Will Probably Be Found One Day
KABUL (Reuters) - Osama bin Laden (news - web sites) will probably be captured or killed one day, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said Thursday, but he added he had no idea when.

Rumsfeld was addressing a news briefing with Afghan President Hamid Karzai that comes amid stepped up U.S. and Pakistani operations against bin Laden's al Qaeda network and the Taliban.

Asked if U.S. and allied forces were getting closer to capturing the world's most wanted man, Rumsfeld said:

"Close doesn't count. The world will be a better place when he is captured or killed. That is the goal of a great many nations... I suspect that we'll find that it is accomplished at some point in the future and I wouldn't have any idea when."

The U.S. military in Afghanistan (news - web sites) has made confident predictions that bin Laden, chief suspect behind the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States, would be caught soon.

And Elvis after a long extended vacation is also putting out feelers.

Rumor also has it that Judge Crater and Jimmy Hoffa have agreed to become Honorary Search Chairmen, for the joint CIA/DIA effort.

For those who don't know

http://home.texoma.net/~hardini/judge_crater.html

Judge Joseph F. Crater is one of the most famous missing men in America, perhaps even the world. On August 6th, 1930, he told friends he would be attending the Broadway play, "Dancing Partner" that evening, and was never seen or heard from again. Nobody has been able to explain why Judge Crater disappeared, although there are no shortage of theories

If he is found this week, you can expect the consequences to be enormous.
(Although if I were Bush, I'd try to keep it a secret we captured Osama, until, let's say, October 29, 2004.)

Do you think OBL could be found this week?

Timing is everything! The election is not until November.

Aw hell, if he can find Osama, this economy will take off like a rocket at liftoff time. In that case, Bush will probably sweep Massachusetts too.

Part of me agrees with you. On the other hand I do not think that
the capture of Osama will be forgotten that easily. A lot of people
will conclude that Bush would have earned another term.

Not true. The elimination of Osama would make Bush something akin
to Lincoln
in 1864, the courageous wartime leader who had, through the difficult days, kept faith and led the country to final victory.

Well OK. I tend to be a bit more optimistic. I think catching OBL would be really big here. The President made a promise to hunt him
down and bring him in, dead or alive. If he makes good on that promise, I think he would regain a lot of the support he had here post-9/11.

If OBL were to be caught, you might as well cancel the election and call the USA for W.

every other story has quoted this one. And the tabloid backed off its story later.

13. If they are relying on
Pakistani sources they may be in for a bigger fall than what Chalabi did to our Iraq Intel. How else could they zero in in Islamist territory? Obviously Osama(or his suitable pretender) would have trouble scooting around as he used to in Afghanistan but we don't overrun that rugged terrain.

I think the odds of spectacular failure or unsatisfying "success" are very high. This is their Iraq goofup mode at its best rather than a repeat of the Hussein rabbit hunt. I think our ground people are competent but the higher levels have more hands in screwing this one up especially on the diplomatic scene, touchy as it is over there already.

20. No, no...
They are going to strip Osama naked, smear him with grease, and let him go on the floor of the Republican Convention, just like a pig at the county fair.

The only folks who'll be killed will be high ranking Republicans fighting over who gets to grease Osama.

Just you watch...
