U.S. report cites Canada's rights woes

By BETH GORHAM

WASHINGTON (CP) - The U.S. State Department's annual rights report for 2003 laments Canada's problems with discrimination and with "lax immigration laws" that it says encourage trafficking in people.

The report, released Wednesday, said the Canadian government "generally respected" the human rights of its citizens, but there were problems with discrimination against women, people with disabilities and aboriginals.

It also noted an increase in the number of reported incidents of anti-Semitic and anti-Muslim harassment.

And while there was no reliable information on the extent of trafficking in people, the department said Vancouver and Toronto served as hubs for organized crime groups drawn by Canada's immigration laws, benefits for immigrants and by proximity to the U.S. border.

2. They definitely have "issues" with disabled people here. Anyone.......
who wants to dispute this claim is welcome to contact me. I absolutely can prove this. Disabled people are really up against the government here to get any kind of support for income and medicine.

4. Compared to the UK and Europe who treat their disabled...............
with dignity, Canada should be ashamed with the way they treat them here.

8. Unlike UK and Europe......

we don't pelt catholics/protestants/ any recently arrived visible minority with rocks. (I've been reading the Globe and Mail today!)

Unlike the U.S. we don't throw mentally disturbed people, obviously sick new mothers, or children in jail for the rest of their lives. :( We don't have children shooting children.

We have really good health care when you think of it, relatively clean streets, affordable housing, etc. We may not be perfect, but think of ANY country in this entire world where people of many different backgrounds can live together in relative harmany.

I give Canada an "A" for effort. I consider myself VERY, VERY lucky to live here.

6. One of my very favourite disability activists is Cdn
and she's coming back here for our conference next month!!!! I'll be sure to ask her, using my first-grade-like signing skills, exactly how she feels about this.

5. Definitively there is room for improvement, but
THIS: President George W. Bush regards advancing human rights as "America's special calling". ROTFLMAO

9. When you point a finger at someone...
...remember that three fingers are pointing right back at you.

USA has the worst record of discrimination based on sexual orientation among developed nation. It should not be pointing out others' faults.
