Critics call Bahamas retreat on school finance inappropriate

08:26 PM CST on Tuesday, February 24, 2004

By CHRISTY HOPPE / The Dallas Morning News

AUSTIN – Gov. Rick Perry's campaign will pay staff expenses for a trip to the Bahamas over the Presidents Day weekend that was shared by large donors, political consultants and advisers on school finance, a spokesman said Tuesday.

When asked about the trip Monday, spokesman Robert Black said he thought the cost of the three-day trip would be borne by private donors. But, he said, the point was clarified on Tuesday and he learned that the governor's political campaign had assumed the costs of the staff.

Mr. Perry, his wife, Anita, and a dozen others flew by private jet to the Abaco Islands where they held a retreat to discuss public school finance, Mr. Black said.

The trip has been blasted by citizens groups that said it is inappropriate for the governor to give special access to political donors and then to discuss important policy issues far from the public on a secluded island.

The article mentions that school voucher advocates, James Leininger and John Lau, who had given $100,000 and $75,000 to Perry's campaign were there, as was the lovely Grover Norquist.

Did Perry take his paramour? Inquiring minds want to know!

Correction: my mistake, it's Karl who prances around DC in a dress, not Norquist. I apologize.

3. They always "volunteer" to pay , AFTER they get caught
It makes one wonder about the ones that we don't find out about..

As far as I am concerned, when someone goes to all the trouble to run for office, and gets hundreds of thousands/millions of people to vote for them, the least they could do is DO THE JOB..GO TO WORK AT YOUR OFFICE EVERY DAY...like the rest of us do..

Take vacations on your own dime.. If some group wants to "talk to you", make them come to the office we pay for and ...by the way.. how about videotaping all those "meetings"??

4. Why isn't norquist in
jail for treason? Why absolutely NO coverage of that story? Isn't it a well known fact that he hobnobs with known "terrorists"?

6. Interesting how they
are making a BIG deal about this and the fact he was with his wife. Was he indeed really there? Is there anything to the big rumor thats been going around the internet? Its just kinda weird that the sos also suddenly made the "news" as being in the hospital around the same time frame, almost like an alibi is being created. You know, a few years back I would have chuckled at someone who questions EVERYTHING and is as suspicious and "paranoid" as I've become, but after what we've seen and heard lately ....................

7. Nice that they went to the islands to talk about school finance,
since one of the options on the table is the "Soylent Gramm" plan to take out life insurance on retired teachers with the proceeds payable to the state! Yeah, let the deaths of teachers pay for the retirement! (This couldn't be why they doubled the deductibe and quit the co-pay on retirees' HEALTH benefits this year, could it?)

Nah, just tin-foil stuff, right? We can trust these guys, after all, they have nothing to hide, eh?

woooooooooooooooo....gotta quit snorting Oxy this time of the day.........
