Macedonia president's plane missing
A plane carrying Macedonian President Boris Trajkovski has disappeared from radar screens, say reports.
The plane vanished during a flight to Bosnia-Hercegovina on Thursday morning near the southern city of Stolac.

Reuters news agency, quoting a government source, said the plane had crashed. There was no official confirmation, or any immediate word on casualties.

Mr Trajkovski was on his way to an investment conference in Mostar.

6. yes
I'm sure the secret powers-that-be, if they could pick ANYONE in the world to assassinate, would pick the President of Macedonia.

7. No
first they would pick a Senator from Minnesota with no national aspirations THEN they would get the President of Macedonia.

10. He would have been so proud
if he only had known he had been mentioned in goofy Republican (former speechwriter for George H. W. Bush) Peggy Noonan's book, When Character Was King:
Peggy Noonan’s new book When Character was King, tells the story of President Bush speaking intimately with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the power behind a cross necklace that Putin was given by his mother. Putin had lost the cross—one that he had had blessed in Jerusalem—and was overjoyed when it was found again. President Bush said to him, "President Putin, that’s what it’s all about—that’s ‘the’ story of the cross."

The President has also knelt for prayer in his private study with Macedonian President Boris Trajkovski, a fellow United Methodist. Bush had recognized the emblem of the United Methodist Church on Trajkovski’s lapel pin.

Neither of these moments were photo-ops, nor meant for public consumption. They were candid moments away from the flashing cameras that reflect the spiritual character of the President.

"I pray all the time," he testifies. "When I am alone in the Oval Office and something might be on my mind…I will pray. I don’t think that I could be sitting here as comfortable as I am and as peaceful as I am had it not been for my religion." We believe that it is a remarkable paradox that the most powerful man in the world finds his strength on his knees.

11. Any ideas who may
have had it in for him? I'm suspicious of small plane crashes these days and wonder as I know nothing about this guy.

14. sometimes
a cigar is in fact only a cigar, as Freud once said.

Seriously though, plenty of people *might* have had it in for him. Macedonia has a history of assasinations and near misses when it comes to political figures, and Trajkovski did broker a deal with Albanian extremists which prevented civil war in the country. This, I guess, could have left him open to possible attacks from hardline nationalists and Albanian hardliners alike. On the other hand, the area where the crash happened is notoriously tricky flying terrain.

My suspicion is that this was indeed an accident.

15. Ok, I appreciate
the info as I know nothing of this guy. I just wondered if he perhaps angered putin somehow, as he's been making some seriously scary power grabs lately.

17. nothing to do
with each other, as far as I know. Russia has far less influence in the Balkans than the media would often have you believe, and certainly has very little interest in Macedonian affairs.
