FBI agents took Ground Zero souvenirs (NBC News)
FBI agents took Ground Zero souvenirs
Agent who blew whistle retired after 'tarnishing' FBI

<snip>

NBC News Senior Investigative Correspondent Lisa Myers has learned that at least 13 FBI agents took items including American flags that once flew over the World Trade Center, marble chunks of buildings from the towers, patches from World Trade Center security-guard uniforms, signs and keys marked “World Trade Center,” a glass Tiffany globe that originally cost $350 and somehow survived the collapse.

The items, and the agents’ behavior, are outlined in a scathing report issued in December by the Justice Department's Inspector General. Sources familiar with the Inspector General’s investigation provided details of the still-confidential report to the NBC News Investigative Unit. The report recommends disciplinary action for two agents who allegedly took items from the World Trade Center ruins, and chastises the FBI for having “no written policy governing what could be taken from recovery sites or mass crime scenes.”

And...

The FBI Special Agent who triggered the investigation, Jane Turner, is retired, accused of "tarnishing" the FBI by alleging theft by her colleagues. The inspector general report seems to confirm her charge that the Tiffany globe was taken from Ground Zero by an FBI agent in Minneapolis. The inspector general says the agent’s "misconduct warrants discipline." He's still on the job and won't comment to NBC.

"I think it's amazing that the thief is still in the FBI and the good and honorable agent who gave many productive years was forced out," Turner says. The FBI claims Turner was not dismissed for blowing the whistle, but had been a problem employee for years.

Apparently the only thing that will get one fired from the FBI, is being an honest person.

Maybe we could get the retired disgruntled Intel Agents to form up with the retired disgruntled FBI Agents. Would love to attend a meeting or two of theirs!!!

2. ghoulish grave robbers
Shouldn't anything of significance have been turned over to survivor's families?

"The FBI claims Turner was not dismissed for blowing the whistle, but had been a problem employee for years."

Kind of funny that a longterm problem employee is assigned to the WTC investigation and then gets fired after blowing the whistle on the grave robbers but the thieves are still on the job. FBI got some 'splainin to do.

6. Its sacreligious. when my husband was killed
a man snuck into the room my dead husbands body was in and started taking pictures of his body right after he died. The man then went to MY lawyer and tried to sell the pictures to him for the court trial (injury/death lawsuit)..My lawyer told the man "You better GIVE me those pictures buddy, or Ill be filing a lawsuit against you and throw your ass in jail..
People are horribly evil and mean and often would steal the gold from their dead grandmothers mouth ..
Thats why Im a hermit now, pretty much, human beings disgust me mostly. I know how the 9/11 families feel...disgusted .

8. That's horrible! I had a friend who died in a courthouse restroom
of a heart attack. As the plaintiff, he had excused himself briefly during a trial to use the mens' room. He never returned to the court room.

A short time later, he was found on the floor of the mens' room. All of his gold jewelry had been removed...along with the contents of his briefcase. Subsequently, looters ("friends") even robbed his condo!

12. A little off subject but something to consider when a family member dies
Edited on Thu Feb-26-04 06:52 AM by NNN0LHI
There have been many cases in the area I live in where scum bags scout the obituaries and then rob the dead persons house while all of the family are at the wake or the funeral. Always have a friend or neighbor stay at the house during these times to prevent this. Imagine coming home after burying a loved one and finding your house burglarized.

9. Subtext: "Souvenirs" <> "evidence"
Does this mean that it is now easier to evade blame for tampering
with evidence at the scene of a crime?

This would cover both the unauthorized disposal of (inconvenient)
evidence and the placing of (misleading) "evidence". If anyone
reports anything suspicious then the fallback position is that the
agent involved gets a slapped wrist for "souvenir hunting" rather
than an investigation ...

11. FBI chastised for having 'no written policy'...against theft?
I just saw this quote:

(the report)...chastises the FBI for having “no written policy governing what could be taken from recovery sites or mass crime scenes.”

:wtf:

Isn't that theft? When are any of us allowed to just walk up and take something from private property? You can't even take stuff out of National Parks (like wild vegetation, etc...).

The FBI has no written policy against theft?

I guess that would explain a lot of things over the last 30 years! What else do they 'lack a written policy' covering? Murder? Lying? Bribery?

FBI Agent, Turner, blew whistle on Ground Zero, 911, theft.
She says she immediately reported the problem to a federal prosecutor, then to her supervisor, and waited for him to act.
Two weeks later, after nothing apparently had been done, Turner seized the globe, bagged it as evidence and took it to Justice Department officials in Washington.
(She's being fired.)

Lost In Translation
Edmonds says that the supervisor, in an effort to slow her down, went so far as to erase completed translations from her FBI computer after she'd left work for the day.

“The next day I would come to work, turn on my computer and the work would be gone. The translation would be gone,” she says. “Then I had to start all over again and retranslate the same document. And I went to my supervisor and he said, ‘Consider it a lesson and don't talk about it to anybody else and don't mention it.’”

Did The FBI Destroy Evidence?
The FBI and prosecutors ordered the destruction in 1999 of evidence from a bank robbery they once suspected linked Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh to white supremacists who were threatening before McVeigh's bombing to attack the government, documents show.
The evidence included a surveillance videotape of a bank robbery by some of the supremacists that occurred in Ohio five months before the bombing. The FBI lab compared the tape to pictures of McVeigh, but concluded a match was "inconclusive," internal memos show.

FBI report on agents released after long delay

An internal FBI report kept under wraps for three years details dozens of cases of agents fired for egregious misconduct and crimes, including drug trafficking, attempted murder, theft, misuse of informants and consorting with prostitutes.

The report, released Wednesday by Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, found that about one in 1,000 agents was dismissed for serious misconduct or criminal offenses by the FBI during the period examined, from 1986 to 1999. The average was between eight and nine per year.

Although the numbers were small, the FBI’s attempts to prevent the report’s disclosure from the public and Congress since its completion in June 2000 is raising questions among FBI critics about an attempt to avoid embarrassment.

Grassley, a senior member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said in a letter Wednesday to FBI Director Robert Mueller that he was concerned about “a lack of response to the findings and recommendations, a general lack of support for the project and even efforts to prevent its completion.”

Grassley said the report “almost never saw the light of day.” It was only provided to lawmakers in July 2003, months after it was requested, and was accompanied by a Justice Department letter urging that it be kept confidential.
