Sri Lankan rebels declare unilateral cease-fire
Source: AP

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka – Sri Lanka's rebels declared a unilateral cease-fire on Sunday as a top U.N. official pressed Sri Lankan leaders to let aid into the northeastern war zone where tens of thousands of civilians are trapped.

Sri Lanka's Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa rejected the call, saying the rebels were "running" from government forces, who have pushed deep into the Tamil Tigers' strongholds in the north in recent months, surrounding the beleaguered rebels and vowing to end the quarter-century war.

The United Nations and others have been pushing for a negotiated truce to allow civilians to escape, as reports have grown of starvation and casualties among those trapped by the fighting.

1. declaring a "unilateral" cease fire isn't a cease fire at all.
they should let their herded up human shields go during the cease fire.

2. But like you said, it isn't really a cease fire. More like a surrender.
If the government lets up so the civilians can escape, Tamil Tigers could sneak out among them to fight another day. After 25 years of civil war, this must surely be on Sri Lankan leaders' minds.

playing the human shield card and finger point the government for the mass killings has become a little more difficult thanks to the internet

6. ?? where does the video show civilians being shot? as the commentator claims?
Edited on Sun Apr-26-09 01:34 PM by Vehl
Anyone who watches this video would be hard pressed to find any footage of the rebels shooting the civilians, I watched it three times and am still not able to see it. can you? if so pray do let me know if it shows; cos try as i might; i couldnt find it.

The claim by the government commentator is unsubstantiated. And the Srilankan government is well known for such blatant disinformation/propaganda..one has but to listen to what Major General Ulf Henricsson of the Norwegian Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) had to say about the massacre of 17 aid workers belonging to the Action Contre La Faim by the Srilankan military.

International ceasefire monitors Wednesday blamed the Sri Lankan military for the massacre of 17 local aid workers from international group Action Contre La Faim earlier this month, Reuters reported, quoting Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM). Outgoing SLMM head Ulf Henricsson, called the killings a

"committed act of assassination"
and "one of the most serious recent crimes against humanitarian aid workers worldwide,"

AP reported.

“SLMM is, with the obtained findings, convinced that there cannot be any other armed groups than the Security Forces who could actually have been behind act,” the SLMM said. The finding is based on its investigation and interviews with other parties and the international community, the SLMM said.

15 of the ACF staff had been found dead on the floor of their ruined office, while two had been gunned down while apparently trying to escape in a car. In the office, the bodies, clad in ACF T-shirts, had bullet wounds and most of them lay face down. All except one, a Muslim, were Tamils.

The SLMM ruled the execution-style killings of the aid workers in Muttur a breach of the Ceasefire Agreement. Earlier, the SLMM charged that the Sri Lankan authorities are deliberately hampering efforts to investigate the murder of 17 aid workers, some of whose relatives also blamed the military for the killings.

“I have experienced this in the Balkans before. When you're not let in, it's a sign that there's something they want to hide,”

Henricsson told Reuters two weeks ago.

“You have a lot of time to clear it up. If there was clear evidence for the LTTE to have done it, why not let us in to see it?”

Henricsson said amid accusations by the Sri Lankan government the Tamil Tigers carried out the massacre.

They (government forces) are denying us access to the whole area, so we cannot monitor. There were journalist trips arranged to Mutur. That was possible, but we had no access. Why? For security reasons? Of course not. There are other reasons.

The SLMM report Wednesday backed up accusations by parents of some of the murdered aid workers who blamed Sri Lankan troops who recaptured Muttur town from the LTTE in early August for the killings.

The Srilankan Government responded to the Allegations by this Norwegian monitoring mission by claiming that the NGO's are "white terrorists"!! :eyes:

Also note that Foreign journalists have been barred from visiting the Affected parts of the country and only "national" media reporters are taken on "arranged trips" by the Military.

For anyone interested; the Amnesty international, Doctors without borders, UNICEF, and the human rights watch have many reports on their websites about the human rights abuses by the srilankan government, and its military. not surprisingly; these NGO's have also been termed " terrorists" by the Srilankan government ministers. :)

The Srilankan president; who is also a American citizen has a case filed against him for Genocide in the American courts

4. Sri Lanka rejects Tamil Tiger ceasefire
COLOMBO (Reuters) - The Tamil Tigers declared a unilateral ceasefire Sunday, but Sri Lanka dismissed it as a "joke" and said only a surrender would stop troops from finishing the last battle in Asia's longest modern war.
