Dallas Passes Resolution Against Patriot Act!!!
Edited on Wed Feb-25-04 06:05 PM by anarchy1999
Deep in the heart of Bush Country!!!

No link yet. Just left City Hall. Passes by a narrow margin with 4 abstaining including the mayor.

Cheers to all who worked long and hard on making it happen!

15. The Dallas BORDC are the ones that ROCK!
http://www.bordcdallas.org/content/en/home/index.jsp;jsessionid=E08BDC2E12633FC69263AE642DD8C41B

Many people were involved and many, many hours were put in. Lots of people representing a broad cross section of the city showed up today and didn't leave until they finally voted around 4:00 pm. 1 hour of 3 minutes speeches from citizens, 1 hour of 5 minute speeches from council. LONG, Long day for everyone.

It was nail-biting time by the time they voted. I think it only passed by one vote, maybe two.

11. Yes, Ashcroft was here just in last week or two.
Apparently only reinforced opinions of those that abstained or voted no. Councilperson's voting yes, truly were representing their constituencies well. Dallas is a pretty divided little town if you know what I mean.

19. You said you were at City Hall
What was it like? Was this expected? Will it cause much controversy?

You know, like stuff that happened when you were there.

20. Hard to say what reaction will be.
Most people in Dallas have very little to do with what happens at City Hall. Most people, I would be willing to bet, did not even know about it. Hell, this morning on my way in I met a young woman going to the library (late 20's-early 30's), my companion asked if she was on her way to City Hall for the Patriot Act. She did not even know what the Patriot Act was????? Like you've got to be kidding me.

Pretty much what you run into in this town. Alot of uninvolved, brain dead, SUV driving empty people.

If it makes the Dallas Morning News tomorrow, then we will see. Not many even bother to read the paper.

OH HAPPY DAY!
The one citizen against them passing it said "Think of the headline, this in an election year, Dallas bashes Bush" or something along that line and one of the no vote councilperson said pretty much the same thing. The ignorance level of a couple of no voters was pretty bad.

Another councilman voting no went over the top, got emotional about being at war, our servicemen and actually cried. One hell of a performance for the cameras that were rolling for the local news at 6:00 and 10:00. Over the top!

It's when you get into the far North reaches where it gets dangerous, and oh yes, let us not forget "Highland Park". Home territory of Bush and Cheney and major supporters.

30. I wish George sr. had "abstained".
I wondered how long it would take for conservatives to come to the defense of the Constitution! Given time, I knew they would. It is right up there with the Bible as a sacred document, for most of them.

The assault Patriot makes on the constitution, along with their marriage amendment, plus Orrin Hatch's "Arnold" amendment, taken together means the GOP hates the US Constitution!

Otherwise, why do they want to change it so much! We can beat the hell out of them with this.

33. Congratulations Dallas!!
Welcome to the Civil Liberties Safe Zone areas of the country. Austin is one too. We were the second city in Texas. Our little sister burb to the south of us, Sunset Valley beat us.

Dallas, Austin, Sunset Valley. Come on Houston get on board.

36. To one and all - I'm told I should quit being shocked and awed....
repeatedly.

Tonight, once again, I'm shocked. We surfed and caught every local news channel at 10:00pm. Not a word. Only on one "independent" channel for less than 1 minute.

I'm sorry, I just am consistently amazed at the lack of information being fed to the masses in this huge community. My husband said they would wind up with a kitten being saved by firefighters, he was close, it's a squirrel.

Be glad you don't live in this place.

Peace out.

Come join us all in Crawford on March 20th.

37. Oh yes. Cover up, Grand Central Style.
Can not afford to give this issue to much press. Bad for Bush.
I think I get it now. How silly of me. This is going to take days. May not even be covered in tomorrow's headlines. Maybe Saturday, or better yet, Monday of next week. Not an issue, Republican style, Texas standard. Remember everyone, you did hear it here from an eyewitness, hope I get to live to tell the story.
