The state Senate's Judiciary Committee has recommended that the Legislature reject legalizing same-sex marriage in New Hampshire.

The committee voted 3-2 Thursday against a bill that passed the House last month. Committee Chairwoman Deborah Reynolds, a Democrat, said she doesn't think New Hampshire is ready for gay marriage. Republicans who voted against it said marriage is an institution created and defined by God as between one man and one woman.

You know, Mrs. Reynolds is right. It was a good thing we waited to push for integration in Alabama before they were "ready". Oh, wait...

Call and thank her for her cowardice:

4. I am so sick already of Republicans telling me what God wants
If he's out there and as all-powerful as they say he is, he certainly doesn't
need a bunch of self-righteous Republic(an)s to carry his message around. Self-
appointed interpreters of divine will have no place in any legislature in the
land where separation of church and state are enshrined in our basic covenants.

6. This defines why the whole idea of g-o-d of the Bible is insane!
Anybody can define the g-o-d of the Bible to mean anything they want...I wish humans could break the spell they are under.

To be honest if you worship the g-o-d in the Bible you worship a evil bigoted cold blooded rapist child molesting murderer! PERIOD!

The problem is made worse by so-called moderate Christians who jump through hoop after hoop to redefine the Bible as peaceful and nice when they know in their heart it is anything but!!!

People can have a healthy spiritual life without the Bronze Age Bible! If people would walk away from the Bible and worship the Jefferson bible or something then the freaks would be in numbers so small they would look like Tom Cruise and the Alien Cult!

20. The issue is not what people believe about God. The issue is separation of church
and state. My personal beliefs are really no one's business, unless and until I try to make them the law of the land. That's when it all gets icky.

23. YES! I Agree...
We should keep our spirituality to ourselves! Once it is public then it becomes a threat to society. IMHO

19. I'm sick of Democrat Deborah Reynolds, too, though. Actually, I don't
mind people telling me what God wants. Free speech and all that. I do very much mind their trying to force me and everyone else to live in accordance with their interpretation, though.

Keep your individual religious belief out of our laws and I'll gladly help you keep our laws out of your religious belief. However, it IS a two-way street.

24. I mind plenty. Here's why:
When people say they KNOW for sure what God wants, what they are really saying is what THEY want,
and justify their getting it by any means necessary with the divine backing. It's innocent enough if
it doesn't affect me, but as there's no telling when that may change (someone who says they get
their marching orders straight from God is not playing with a full deck, in my experience). Speech
is free, obviously, but if someone wants to kill you for your looks, gayness, etc. and says God
wanted them to do it, well, you see where that can lead. Inhibition falls by the wayside if you have
divine backing for anything you want to do to anyone. It's not the speech that poses a danger,
it's the mentality behind it. Some of it is posturing by control freaks, but the ones who really
think they have every right to hurt or kill you because God wants it to happen-they are serious problems.

Faith by definition means you BELIEVE something. That's not a problem. But when they KNOW their
beliefs constitute absolute truth, then they KNOW that anyone who believes differently is wrong.
That's where the trouble starts.

7. I attended a Public Hearing on Mariiage Equality in Maine yesterday
It was awesome to hear the loving, reasoned testimony in favor of the bill. The opposition was horrid. At one point, a "gentleman" said legally gay marriage would give gays access to more children for them to molest. A good part of the crowd stood up and turned their backs to the speaker. I was appalled!

I'm pretty sure this will pass the Maine legislature (the Senate is still iffy though.) If it does pass the opposition will try to get it reversed by referendum in November.

8. Well I talked to the Goddess today and she said it should be just fine.
She said whom ever someone loves is none of our business and we should just shut up about it already and stop worrying about whats going on in our neighbors bedroom.
She said, and I quote, " If two people, created by me and God love each other, let them marry."
She also said we need more laws against perverts that are poking their noses into other peoples sex lives.
Just so you know.

10. So if God is the author of marriage laws - why aren't we suing to get
them all thrown out of our civil lives? Wouldn't that frost some asses to find out that all of their worldly goods were up for grabs because they no longer got a free pass of using "god's" laws in civil court. Bet they'd think it was time to write some civil marriage laws pretty damn quick

11. They need to elaborate on whose "God" they're talking about.
You would never know New Hampshire is supposedly going "blue" because so many of the Democrats are actually Republicans. Dems have been in control for a few years now and the only thing that has happened with healthcare, for example, is that the governor raised rates for CHIP premiums. I should have looked harder for a place to live in Vermont.

New Hampshire senate committee rejects gay marriage

(Concord, N.H.) The state Senate’s Judiciary Committee has recommended that the Legislature reject legalizing gay marriage in New Hampshire.

The committee voted 3-2 Thursday against a bill that passed the House last month. Committee Chairwoman Deborah Reynolds, a Democrat, said she doesn’t think New Hampshire is ready for gay marriage. Republicans who voted against it said marriage is an institution created and defined by God as between one man and one woman.

Two years ago, the Legislature approved, and Gov. John Lynch signed, civil unions for gays, which provide all the rights of marriage, except in name.

Lynch has not said specifically whether he would veto the gay marriage bill.

14. Democrat Deborah Reynolds voted against it with her Republican colleagues
with friends like that....

Hmmm - Opponents argued that the bill would open public restrooms to use by either sex.

That's a new one on me

Can someone please tell me what keeps gay men out of the ladies room right and lesbians out of the men's room today?

17. Well if waiting until a state is "ready" for something is what "leaders" should do
then we'd still have slavery wouldn't we.
Way to lead there Deborah. Makes me think Debbie Reynolds is in charge.
