(Senator) Cornyn Calls For Release of Results From "Torture Memo"
Edited on Tue Apr-21-09 01:41 PM by sabra
Source: RTT News

Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, said Tuesday that the release of controversial Justice Department memos authorizing certain strenuous interrogation techniques should prompt even further disclosure.

Cornyn, who heads the Senate Republican campaign arm, said that he agrees with former Vice President Dick Cheney who has now called for the declassification of memos documenting the results of the "enhanced interrogation techniques" including waterboarding that some critics have called torture.

"They ought to go ahead and release what the interrogation techniques actually produced so that people will be able to put it in context and understand both the urgency of the matter, because it was at a time when we thought another attack like 9-11 was potentially imminent and they can evaluate for themselves whether these interrogation techniques did in fact produce good intelligence," he said.

He added, "According to the vice president and other reports I've heard, they did. I'm convinced that this likely averted another terrorist attack on one or more occasions."

11. Greymail!
...with a twist.

Definition: Greymail is a defense tactic available to government employees who have connections with national security. When charged with a crime, the defendent claims that classified records are necessary to the defense. The goal of the defense team is to request so many classified documents that the federal government says "no." At that point, the defense tries to convince a judge that they cannot get a fair trial without these records; the goal is to have the case or charges dismissed.

Graymail is particularly invidious because it is likely to be most successfully employed by former officials from the heart of the government machine who subsequently face trial.

15. I can't wait for them to find none. Since Cheney lied about asking,
they probably don't exist.

3. If the Japanese learned valuable information by torturing Americans during WWII,
...does that make it OK?

How about if the North Vietnamese learned valuable information by torturing Americans during the Vietnam War?

10. Some of us really tried during last election
I wish they would divide Texas into five states, as long as one state could be the blue central area.

6. But if they put these prisoners in solitary and sleep deprived them for 30 days
before interrogation --- what was the damned urgency? I've read over and over that the prisoners were "softened up" for weeks or months before interrogation. Doesn't fit the ticking time bomb scenario at all.

9. Go ahead, declassify it all.
It still does not change this one simple fact-- the ends do not, and will never, justify torture! People who think so are psychopaths.

13. OK, John. As long as you release all of the memos.
Including the ones where those being tortured confessed to killing Lincoln, the Archduke of Serbia, and the Russian royal family.

17. what was cheney
doing at the white house so early on 9/11?

he really got up early that day! i guess when he was a younger man in much better health and didn't have to worry about how and what methods of torture would be effective to inflict intelligence, he got to the job extra early.

btw, Sen. John Cornyn should just shutup.
