BREAKING NEWS: Boston police charge a man they had in custody Monday in the fatal attack on a hotel masseuse hired through Craigslist. Details to come.
(AP)
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (April 20) — Police in Rhode Island have released surveillance camera photos of a suspect in an attempted robbery of an exotic dancer.

Authorities believe the case may be connected to last week's slaying in a Boston luxury hotel of a woman who advertised massage services on Craigslist.
Police say they've received more than 150 tips about the April 14 slaying of Julissa Brisman at the Boston Marriott Copley Place.
The New York City woman advertised massage services on Craigslist and had a massage table set up in the room where she was shot to death.

1. It's a BU Medical Student. Updated link:
http://www.boston.com/news/local/breaking_news/2009/04/_survillance_ph.html

"Boston police tonight arrested Philip Markoff, a 22-year-old Boston University medical student, in the murder of 26-year-old Julissa Brisman at the Copley Marriott last week and an attack on a second woman at a Back Bay hotel.

Markhoff, who allegedly contacted the women through Craigslist ads, had been the target of a national manhunt since police last week released hotel security footage of a fair-haired young men believed to be responsible for Brisman's murder."

If you get something stolen, chances are you'll find it listed for sale on Craigslist.

14. Are you mad at the "fair haired" or the "young" or the "men?"
They shouldn't have used the plural. It's breaking news, though--they were rushing. They've also had a lot of layoffs lately.

However, "fair haired" (if you are talking about someone with light colored hair) works here. Still. So does "young man."

Maybe that's one reason why proofreading is getting so sloppy-- everyone seems to think that "proofreading" now is just running something through SpellCheck.

8. I love Craiglist and have bought and sold many useful things and services.
You just have to be careful about it. The scams are usually easy to spot. This particular thing could have been arranged through many different sites or other means.
Serial killers always find a way. I don't think Craigslist is to blame.

17. Suspect Arrested in Craigslist Slaying
Source: New York Times

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: April 20, 2009
Filed at 10:28 p.m. ET
BOSTON (AP) -- A Boston University medical student was arrested Monday in the shooting death in a hotel of a masseuse and the robbery of another woman who both advertised their services on Craigslist.
Phil Markoff, 22, was arrested during a traffic stop Monday afternoon on Interstate 95 in Walpole, south of Boston, Police Commissioner Ed Davis said at a news conference to announce the arrest. He is also connected to an assault on a Las Vegas exotic dancer in Rhode Island last week.

Markoff's arrest came days after his image was shown on surveillance video at the hotels. Davis said that authorities had him under observation for days before making the arrest.

Authorities said Markoff was originally from upstate New York and now lives in Quincy, just south of Boston. A Facebook profile matching Markoff's identity, including his photograph, lists him as a 2007 graduate of State University of New York-Albany and in the 2011 class at BU.

26. I found that movie very sad...
...but they weren't bad people. To be sure, Ellie was a narcissist and Beverly was weak. Both had a serious drug problem, which exacerbated their difficult and, for both, detrimental symbiosis. This individual would be more akin to Jack the Ripper (assuming the rumours to be true), as one poster aptly pointed out.

27. I just meant in terms of pure creep factor, is all.
I certainly wasn't trying to draw any moral equivalency, which is kind of stupid anyway when comparing fictional characters vs. real-life people.

..."Dead Ringers" was based on a true account which took place in New York and was described in the novel "Twins" by Bari Wood and Jack Geasland.

Life, stranger than fiction.

25. It's uncanny what one could get away with in that position.
As a trained physician myself, I know the attitude quite well. Recently, while applying for a new flat, the landlord asked me my profession. I don't normally say it unless asked directly. (At parties I'll tell people I'm a "xenobiologist", which is my dream job. The looks I get are hilarious.) Anyway, I answered the man and the place was instantly mine. Even when I was in med school people would literally take a step back when I told them what I studied. I hastened to say that I thought ongoing physicists were the more intelligent under the students. There's a joke in Germany, where I went to school (for free), which goes: What is the difference between a physics student and a med student? Answer - When the professor gives them the assignment to memorize a telephone book, the physics student asks "why?" and the med student asks "till when?". That's not to say we are all idiots, but we are also not demigods. This individual could have used this position to his advantage and caused incalculable suffering. I'm so happy they caught him. If he is indeed guilty, it's good to know they nipped it in the bud.
