S.F. mayor says Bush is 'fundamentally wrong'

By Herbert A. Sample -- Bee San Francisco Bureau
Published 2:15 a.m. PST Wednesday, February 25, 2004

SAN FRANCISCO - Evoking images of the civil rights movement of the 1960s, Mayor Gavin Newsom on Tuesday blasted President Bush for supporting a constitutional amendment banning gay marriages.

Newsom, who two weeks ago began making marriage licenses available to gay couples, said Bush's advocacy for such an amendment was akin to "standing at the courthouse door."

Bush, Newsom asserted, is trying to "write discrimination into the U.S. Constitution. The Constitution protects citizens, not politicians during re-election bids."

Meanwhile, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger declined to say whether he would support a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.

2. Hmm. A national figure in the making.
And establishing himself on the left, even though he didn't run from that side, if I'm remembering correctly.

3. You are remembering correctly:
everyone was disappointed when he won and now look at what's happened!

I'm thinking 3rd party possibilities once we get rid of Bush.

We need to keep on eye on him!

4. It will be fun seeing him take the Guvs. mansion from Ah-nold.
He's becoming a national figure the old fashioned way. By doing the right thing.

5. This is actually political suicide.
I doubt he'll have much of a career in politics after he leaves SF.
Bigots througout this country would never support him.

That's what's impressive by his move, he really is doing what is RIGHT and not playing politics.

6. Not quite
Gavin will probably get re-elected in 2007 and then move onto California Assembly or State Senate. He's young and might have a big future in California politics.

I'm VERY impressed with him.

7. AWOL is 'fundamentally psychotic' and all top leaders should undergo
psychological testing and drug testing too! Why do the citizens and children have to undergo this treatment but the leaders don't?
