GM exec says 1,600 will lose jobs in next few days
Source: AP Yahoo

DETROIT (AP) -- About 1,600 workers at General Motors Corp. will lose their jobs in the next few days as the troubled automaker accelerates cost cuts in order to qualify for more government aid. GM North America President Troy Clarke said in an e-mail to employees sent Monday that the layoffs are needed to ensure the company's long-term viability.

"In these unprecedented times, GM is reinventing every aspect of our business, including our organizational size and structure, to create a lean and agile company," Clarke wrote in the e-mail obtained by The Associated Press.

Clarke said the next week will be "a very trying time for the entire GM team, but especially for those employees directly impacted by these actions."

GM CEO Fritz Henderson said Friday that the company still would prefer to restructure out of court as it tries to prove it can survive to repay the government, but he conceded that bankruptcy protection is more likely than it was in the past.

1. I hope the same execs don't call welfare recipients lazy or greedy...
Nor do layoffs resolve the core problems our economy faces.

4. They have 1600 MBAs running around?
I swear, if we were to take the MBA population of this country and send it for a long walk off a short plank, we'd all be better off. Old fart time: I was working on the annual bulletin of Campbell University's business school once. (Campbell is like Pensacola Christian College, Northern Campus.) In this issue they reported on a speech an executive from a manufacturing company gave to Campbell's MBA students. The executive told them you could maximize profits by using only the least expensive materials and by cutting labor costs to the bone--he didn't mention offshoring, but you know that's what he meant.

The sad thing is the story ended with them indicating this was a good thing.

Take a lesson from Henry Ford, children. Henry Ford was one of the most evil industrialists known to man and an antisemitic fuckwit to boot, but he at least realized the only way he was going to get filthy rich is if people could afford to buy cars--and they don't get there making a nickel a day.
