Poll: Kerry has big California lead, Bush's ratings have plunged
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/news/archive/2004/02/25/state0934EST0040.DTL

Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry holds a wide lead over John Edwards among likely voters in next Tuesday's Democratic presidential primary, and President Bush's approval ratings in the state are at their lowest level since he took office in 2001, a new poll found.

The nonpartisan Field Poll released Wednesday shows Kerry with 60 percent support among likely voters, compared with just 19 percent for Edwards, a senator from North Carolina. Rep. Dennis Kucinich of Ohio had 3 percent support, Rev. Al Sharpton had 2 percent, and 11 percent were undecided.

<snip>

Meanwhile, the poll showed Bush's approval ratings have taken a marked plunge in the last month. Just 43 percent of California voters say they approve of the job he is doing, while 51 percent disapprove. In January, the numbers were almost reversed, with 52 percent saying they approved of the president's job performance while 42 percent disapproved.

Voter disapproval was highest on Bush's handling of the budget deficit -- 67 percent said they disapproved of the job he is doing, while just 27 percent approve. A majority also disapproved of his handling of other key areas, including illegal immigration, health care, the economy and the war in Iraq.

Just 38 percent said they considered Bush a leader they could trust, while 61 percent said they had doubts and reservations about him.

3. yikes!
And "approval" ratings are always several points higher than re-elect numbers, so * might as well write California off and if he is doing that badly, the local Repugs probably don't want a leper like that campaigning anywhere near them for fear of negative coattails.

8. Great news, if that spread remains so wide, even the
Terminator won't be able to rig the election.

Please dear God, let the masses come out in droves and be heard loud and clear..that is my election prayer.

Has a much nicer ring to it than "terminator"

24. Either that, or Schwarzengroper.
Arnold thinks he can deliver California to the republi-CONS. Rove and company think so, too. But I think California has a mind of its own. It tends to skew liberal, or whacky (witness falling all over Arnold, regardless what we know about him). THIS Californian plans to do everything she can to leave Arnold with egg on his face. Nobody I know wants to vote for bush anymore. Including my mom and her elderly "squeeze," who says he and his friends are disgusted (you'd fully and correctly expect them to be quite conservative), and in fact have been looking at Edwards.

I do NOT care. Any of 'em are better than bush. PLUS, there is also the discouragement factor, which probably played heavily in past Democratic losses. You start to see the polls leading up to Election Day, and then the first returns on Election Night (from states back east, while WE are still voting!), and people DO INDEED say "what's the use? No point now. I give up." California's 50-plus electoral votes are NOT going to go to bush.

7. 43% means we're getting down to the hard core base which
I've unofficially declared to be 27 to 33% which teeters depending on hot issue flare-ups like guns.
