President plans California visit after primary
President plans California visit after primary
2-day trip aims to counter Dems

Carla Marinucci, Chronicle Political Writer
Tuesday, February 24, 2004

Aiming to counter Democratic presidential candidates who have dominated the recent political debate in California, President Bush will visit the state for a two-day swing on the heels of the March 2 Super Tuesday primary.

Bush's trip to the nation's most populous state is scheduled to begin March 3 in Los Angeles, where he plans to attend two campaign fund-raisers and preside over a White House conference on faith-based community efforts.

White House officials are exploring the possibility of a Bush event to focus on jobs, possibly in the Central Valley, before the president flies to the Bay Area for another fund-raiser March 4 in Santa Clara.

The president's trip, which will be his 12th to California, is timed for just after the Democratic presidential primary -- a strategy used earlier in the campaign for presidential visits to New Hampshire, Missouri and South Carolina.

1. This should be interesting

Let us not forget that the largest number of Dean supporters in the nation are out here in CA. There are over 100,000 of us here. 70% voter turnout at the recall was nothing compared to what I think will be a huge turnout in the fall. The recall passed barely, Arnie won on star power. McClintock the true repug in the race only got 9% of the vote. If they are excited over a 9% approval of a conservative then I say bring it on.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
"Republicans insist that they are more competitive in California and that the recall last fall of Democratic Gov. Gray Davis marked a shift in the political landscape here."

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Let us not forget that a lot of what Arnie promised in the election, he has not done, or is now refusing to do. He got rid of the Vehicle License Fee increase. But he has not offset that revenue loss with anything else and that is causing a lot of cities and towns more financial hardship. He increased the cost of a college education, and he went after k-12 which he promised he would not do. You know what else marked a shift in the political landscape: Gay marriages and immigration. Those things were not part of the recall and they were not part of the Bush visit last fall. There is a war that has gone bad, approval ratings that have gone bad, an economy that has gone bad. He increased the fees for the Hetch-hetchy reservoir from, I think, $30k to $8 million since then. He is gong to have a fundraiser and an official visit in the same stop so the taxpayers can pick up the cost without him having to spend a dime of his election funds.

I personally have registered 25 people as first time voters to the Democratic party. I have gotten 4 to switch from Republican to Democrat on the voter registration. I have have been working my ass off to get him out of office and there are a lot of us out here that feel more strongly than I do about this.

4. I bet the government picks up the tab for his little trip, too
He always finds places to give little job-related pep talks right around where Democrats had primaries.

Is it part of his job description to give us little pep talks? I'm just wondering, because I've been involved in hiring management and 'executive' level employees before, and I don't recall anything about giving little pep talks being one of the requirements.
