Hatch to Act on Marriage Measure
http://www.rollcall.com/issues/49_82/news/4490-1.html (subscription required)

On the day President Bush came out in favor of a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, top Senate Republicans said they will begin hearings on the issue next week and could force a vote on the measure in the next few months.

Senate Judiciary Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) indicated that the deadline for floor action would not extend for more than a few months.

Hatch said he will not allow opponents of the amendment to bury it in the Judiciary Committee indefinitely and vowed to use whatever procedural steps needed to make sure the measure gets to the Senate floor.

“Let’s face the music and see what happens,” said Hatch, who has come under heavy criticism from conservatives over his handling of allegations that Senate GOP aides improperly obtained and distributed confidential memos written by Democratic staffers on the Judiciary Committee.

2. I would hope Democrats and others involved in this issue
would recognize this for what it is. An election issue drummed up by the republicans. I thought this would be an issue when the (republican)supreme court ruled on that Texas case that caused such an uproar a few months ago. It is reminiscent of the prewar hype before the 2002 elections the republicans used to retake the senate. Why Democrats are answering hypothetical questions is beyond me. This issue should be resolved AFTER the elections so the republicans loose this wedge issue.

4. I'm not so sure it IS just an election issue.
Hatch is an uber-Mormon, and a fascist at that. Baaaaaaaaaad combination.

(Full disclosure: I'm ex-Mormon, and believe me when I say that homosexuality is really, really, REALLY hated in the church. Hence my ex-Mormon status by choice. They don't give you a break if you're 'only' bi.)

10. I agree
as another exmormon that is gay I would have to agree. The Mormon church will do all it can to stop gay marriage.

Most importantly Mr. Hatch took an oath in the Mormon Temple promising to give all his time and talents to the "building up of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints." His true motives come from the Church, not from the people of Utah.

13. What really turned me around was the idea of "porn therapy".
Edited on Tue Feb-24-04 10:30 PM by Zhade
As you're no doubt aware - the use of pornography to "fix" queer folk. That, and the electroshock therapy.

And let's not forget the Mormon tabernacles in Hitler's Germany flying swastika flags.

EDIT: by the way, welcome to DU! :hi:

15. Hatch is gonna argue for the bisexual marriage..
to be able to marry each a man and a women. And under the women rights, they will have the same opportunity. Hatch believes that this is the way Joseph Smith would have wanted it.

17. Hatch is afraid his marraige is threatened by gays
By God if gays are allowed to marry the Orin might start hanging out in dimly lit bars wearing black leather outfits, have body peircings and doing unnatural sexual acts with strange men.

6. Now I'm *really* confused
The chairman would rather see an amendment adopted that gives individual states the right to refuse to acknowledge same-sex marriages approved by other states, despite Article IV, Section 1 of the Constitution, which provides that “full faith and credit shall be given in each state to the public acts, records and judicial proceedings of every other state.”

I don't think that everybody will be able to work out their differences in time to pass something this year. Hopefully we'll do well enough in the November elections to block this for a while to come.

Damn, there goes interstate commerce.
Wow, repudiation of the full faith clause. So much for the United States of America. We would defacto have the United Red States and United Blue States, and no guarantee that your contract in one was enforcible in the other... Smart move dipwad.

18. LOVING v. VIRGINIA, 388 U.S. 1 (1967)
http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/scripts/getcase.pl?court=US&vol=388&invol=1

MR. CHIEF JUSTICE WARREN delivered the opinion of the Court

On January 6, 1959, the Lovings pleaded guilty to the charge and were sentenced to one year in jail; however, the trial judge suspended the sentence for a period of 25 years on the condition that the Lovings leave the State and not return to Virginia together for 25 years. He stated in an opinion that:

"Almighty God created the races white, black, yellow, malay and red, and he placed them on separate continents. And but for the interference with his arrangement there would be no cause for such marriages. The fact that he separated the races shows that he did not intend for the races to mix."

the state court concluded that the State's legitimate purposes were "to preserve the racial integrity of its citizens," and to prevent "the corruption of blood," "a mongrel breed of citizens," and "the obliteration of racial pride," obviously an endorsement of the doctrine of White Supremacy. Id., at 90, 87 S. E. 2d, at 756. The court also reasoned that marriage has traditionally been subject to state regulation without federal intervention, and, consequently, the regulation of marriage should be left to exclusive state control by the Tenth Amendment

8. I hope that Hatch does force the issue but I don't think he will
I would like to see Arlen Specter have to show his stripes on this.
I don't think voters will hold it against any Dem Senators who vote against this but I do think Specter could have some problems regardless of how he votes and he is up for reelection. My prediction is that Hatch will go slowly and try to blame the slow progress on Democrats.

9. I was out with the smokers at work today and this topic came out
There were about 10 people, pretty much evenly divided on their opinion of Gay marriage. Though, except for a couple of them, even the ones that didn't like the idea really weren't that bent out of shape about it.

The one thing everyone agreed on, even the ones that said they are adamently opposed to Gay marriage is that the idea of Constitutional Amendment is dumb and that there are way bigger issues to be dealt with. Everyone saw through this as just a red herring to pull attention away from what a miserable failure Bush* is. And all agreed that this is not the issue that will determine how they vote. Most said it won't be something they consider at all.

12. Actually, that's why the issue is being broached now
instead of in September.

They broach the subject now, get the vote on the Senate floor, it goes down in flames along partisan lines, the Republicans tell their fucked in the head base, "see, we tried." The moderate voters forget all about it by November 2nd when the Osama capture is being played for all it's worth.

Just a diversion.

I can't believe that there is anyone who seriously believes they will amend the constitution for this.

that Hatch has done extensive personal research on the gay issue.

If anyone has strong proof, an outing might be in order.
