"It's OK to be Gay, Governor Perry"
About 20 people gathered at the Governor's Mansion today at 10:00 am with signs reading "It's OK to be gay, Guv" and "legalize gay marriage."

The protest was in response to rumors swirling around the capitol that Governor Rick Perry was caught by his wife with another man. Protestors pointed to the fact that Perry, a Republican, has championed anti-gay legislation such as the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA)

5. It's good to let him know it's OK to be gay... but cheating is not OK.
If true, he owes it to his spouse to be faithful. If he must break his commitment, then divorce is fine--not cheating.

25. Yeah, then he can marry his true love.... ooops, not in Tejas
he can't... oh, wait... well, practically nowhere can he do that. Hmmmm.
But gay marriages are destroying the institution of marriage, ummm, how again?

27. Damn, the Repubs are right!
These gays are destroying marriage!! That straight governor would never have ruined his marriage if it wasn't for that gay guy sleeping with him.

6. Great! Eventually...
someone is going to have to address these "rumors." The press? The administration? Come on you cowards. Bring us the "truth" so these "rumors" will stop!

What would this do to Bush's announcement about a gay marriage amendment? There is no doubt the WH knows about this rumor. Carole Keeton Rylander Strayhorn's son is the White House Press Secretary for Pete's sake, and "rumor" has it this stuff is coming straight from her office staff.

7. anyone supporting the supression of a group of people better have
clean hands. I think outing anyone supporting an amendment
against this is justice. Of course, there are those who
feel its 'not nice'. But then, so it hate legislation. What
would it have meant to out Strom Thurmond during the hey
day of segregation? A helluva lot I am thinking. No shade for
hypocrites and liars.

9. Flogging them with their own bigotry...
Not to mention this might force him to issue a denial. And, as we found out during the Lewinsky thing, a denial is almost as good as an admission (in most people's eyes).

I'm not saying it's right, but... ;)

I hate it too. Especially when I post a light-hearted thread in the DU Lounge. Seems inappropriate, then. But it is not. It is always appropriate, as long as the Bu$h wars rage.

23. I hope this is a vigil which grows and grows
because, if true, this is is an amazing confluence of events...the gay marriage civil disobedience in San Fran, the extremely creepy idea of amending the constitution to define marriage as a part of democracy (huh?), and then Bush's home state mayor sneaking thru the alley with his pallie.

What a wonderful way to discuss hyprocrisy..if this is true.

if this is not true...how in the world has it had legs for this long in Texas? just wondering...maybe it's payback from that woman with fifteen names.

31. Kick it for Tuesday night
I was there. We had a good time. There were far more media people than rally supporters. It was great to hear them asking the Rick Perry questions. One reporter I talked to from the national media and a local independent paper said they were tracking down the story to Republican offices. Even if the story wasn't true their take is that it was a kind of rovian play, maybe coming out of Carole Keeton Rylander Strayhorn whatever comes next camp. ha ha. Let the infighting begin! Let them eat their own. We will gladly set the table.

33. New rumors I've heard....
Apparently the Sec. of State was admitted into a hospital recently for appendicitis. People are speculating whether this was actually a suicide attempt. If this is the case, then I'm starting to rethink my love of heckling Goodhair. I don't want anyone to physically get hurt or hurt themselves over this.

And one last thing...assuming the rumors are true, the Governor is most likely bisexual as opposed to being gay or straight.

34. Re: SOS's "emergency appendectomy"
I read on another board that this may have been a ruse to get the SOS out of a speaking engagement in Austin that was virtually open to all ($75 a head). News orgs could have sent their people to the engagement and had them pose questions to the SOS, such as, "Is it true you were found in bed in the Governor's Mansion recently...with the Governor?!"

Didn't Jenna Bush once have an "emergency appendectomy" around Xmas one year? Wonder what that was about.

Governor meets with agencies' leaders in secret
New council bucks tradition
By POLLY ROSS HUGHES
Copyright 2004 Houston Chronicle Austin Bureau
AUSTIN -- Gov. Rick Perry on Wednesday convened the first meeting of the Governor's Management Council, and open-government advocates promptly criticized him for locking the public out of the proceedings.
(snip)

"For true free flow of information, I think to close the doors to talk to those agency heads about what's going on over there, it's quite appropriate to close the doors," Perry said when asked why he thought excluding the public was appropriate.

Perry said the presence of news reporters, in particular, could inhibit "clear and truthful" discussions by public officials. He described the thought process officials might have if the process were open:

"There may be someone saying, `Well, you know what? I don't know whether this idea that I've got I really want to be tagged with. Maybe I haven't thought it completely through,' " he said.
(snip/...)
