Barbara will be responsible for US-led coalition's provisional administration in province of Dhi Qar.

ROME - Italy's Barbara Contini has been named governor of the southern Iraqi province of Dhi Qar, the Italian foreign affairs ministry announced Tuesday.

Contini, 42, will be based in the southern town of Nasiriyah and will be responsible for the US-led coalition's provisional administration in the province. Three other provinces in southern Iraq are under British administration.

Contini has been in Iraq since early 2003 and will take over from incumbent John Bourne, a British national, on Friday.
