Mexico Closes Borders to All U.S. Poultry
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=571&ncid=751&e=1&u=/nm/20040224/hl_nm/birdflu_mexico_dc

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico closed its borders to all poultry imports from the United States on Tuesday, a day after a Texas chicken flock was diagnosed with an extremely infectious and fatal form of bird flu.

Mexico's agriculture ministry said in a statement the ban, effective immediately, affects live poultry as well as processed products.

"As of today, Feb. 24, the Agriculture Ministry (Sagarpa) prohibits the import of tourist (private consumption) and commercial poultry from and coming from the United States, of live birds, their products and subproducts," the ministry said.

Since 2002, Mexico has had its borders closed to poultry imports from North Carolina, Maine, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, Texas, California and Connecticut. Delaware and New Jersey were added this month.

The Texas strain of bird flu is H5N2. The form of bird flu in Asia is H5N1.

3. expect all sorts of specials at your local restaurants
even yet still more chicken on everything at applebees! really cheap chicken specials. cheap beef specials. There's never been a better time to be a carnivore! (Granted, one with a death wish but pay no mind to that man behind the curtain!) More ads for Beef it's whats for breakfast! Chicken it's what's for snacking! Chickshakes - they'll quench your thirst!

Maybe we should start a betting pool for the first pro-chicken ad to come from this.

Add it to Russia, the EU, and South Korea. And Russia is a huge buyer of US poultry.

This is going to kill the rural South.

14. DEVASTATING???? WHY!?
Devastating that places like Tyson who raise chickens in horrifying conditions, pay people crap for wages, and feed chickens ground up chicken/cow/pig/parts/feces/diseased matter and then call it food will have to find another way to make a living. real devastating.

Devastating that organic farmers who raise chicken in humane, healthful ways will suddenly see an increased demand for their product? real devastating.

Look people, if you don't know where your food was made, chances are it was made in ways that would scare the sh*t out of you if you knew. This kind of thing is creepy because of the advertising that will come from it, and the attempts that will result in trying to ditch the product they can't sell. That's scary. Learn about food production, learn where your food comes from and what's on it and you can be in control of what you eat. It's not rocket science.

it will be devastating to the economy, regardless of what you think about the conditions. It will be devastating to organic farmers too, who can now no longer sell their chickens to Mexico, Japan or Europe. Organic farmers won't get a pass on their product and be able to sell it overseas.

I fail to see your point. What part of ALL US Poultry eludes you? That includes organic farmers.

16. Let Mexico Raise her own chickens
They probably would rather raise them their own way besides. Tough chickens can survive
<sarcasm off>
Really though organic Chicken eggs are the best, my wife can't stand them though. She says the yokes are too yellow and they taste funny.

I used to raise chickens on the ground in my backyard before I met her. Sold the eggs to my friends, they wanted everyone of those eggs they could buy from me.

9. Usually it is the other way around.
You can't bring back any meat from Mexico into California. Or produce for that matter. How ironic.

They are hooked on the spicy food, they can't stay away from it. They grow up with it. Just like people hooked on sugar. (the spicy addiction won't really hurt you) They even scientific studies that say that spice is good for you in most ways.

19. I bought fifty pounds of Maine shrimp
at a dollar a pound. Maine shrimp is absolutely delicious--small, not huge, but so sweet. Right off the dock--it was so fresh that the shrimp were still moving around. Had to soak it all overnight in plain water.

I don't know what to eat anymore. I am tempted to buy some chicks and raise my own chickens, as well as a cow or a steer and a lamb. But I am told that the feed and the price of it outweighs the advantages.

This food supply thing is getting absurd.

What can we eat? Fish is full of mercury and salmon is fake colored. Beef is tainted with mad cow, and now we have chickens all sick from something else.

I saw an owl today. It flew from tree to tree, landing on a branch and looking at me all the while from about twenty five feet away. Maybe we can eat owls? And get wise?

22. LOL! owl fricasee
Marianne, that was too funny. But seriously, there is TONS of information out there on organic food, raising your own chickens, what fish is safe to eat, even how to raise fish like tilapia in 50 gal drums on your porch! Cows - well, yes, raising beef isn't all that economical, unless you have enough land where they can wander and eat freely - then you can have enough from one to feed yourself and your family. You'd really only need one a year. maybe one pig too for variety. and some chickens for eggs and meat. We eat WAY more meat in this culture than we need to, and if you garden, you'll have more than enough food to eat. Look into joining a CSA, shopping at your local food co op, renting or trading space for a garden if you don't have space where you are now, community garden plots. You can also find out about organic farmers in your community and look into trading with them, buying from them etc. There are plenty of options for your food supply that don't involve eating toxins by the ton, and supporting agriculture that destroys the planet and the people who work on it. Many of them involve getting to know farmers, your backyard, the people at the seed store, etc - and not shopping at the huge stores so much. In addition, more and more organic producers are putting their product in larger stores - Muir Glen, Cascadian Farms just to name two.

My point is, it's not impossible. You don't have to become an owlitarian ;-) But you do have to change your diet, educate yourself, and you might even find a really great new hobby in the process!
