By MICHAEL NORTON, Associated Press Writer

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti - President Jean-Bertrand Aristide appealed Tuesday for the world to come to Haiti's aid, warning that thousands of deaths and a wave of boat people could result from political chaos.

"Should those killers come to Port-au-Prince, you may have thousands of people who may be killed," Aristide said. "We need the presence of the international community as soon as possible."

1. Sure, there's a good reason for it
It's called 'US covert intervention'. Where the hell do you think the 'rebels' got their money?

5. If those TonTon Macoutes you are supporting...
...make it all the way to Port au Prince, you will likely see who's side the people of Haiti are actually on.

6. Not Aristide's
That's for sure.

The only difference between Aristide and Duvalier is Aristide started out with good intentions and then became corrupt.

7. There are some other huge differences too
But perhaps the only one relevant to those outside Haiti is that Aristide was elected. I know that means nothing to Americans, but the rest of the world may actually have a certain nostalgia for that archaic ritual.

12. In reference to Loonman's response, actually.
Where he compared Duvalier and Aristide. I know the U.S. press likes to play up Aristide's human rights abuses and the "suspect" elections of 2000 - but I'm wondering if any of this is well-documented.

13. I Would Like
To have all the answers.

I don't see much on what is happening in Haiti so I have to find people who have a perspective on things. I found Randall Robinson's interview to be quite balanced and informative. For anyone that has the time, go to 19:33 of the part for his analysis of how things have come about.

I really appreciated the whole interview.

4. It isn't the people who are fed up
Aristide still has over 70% approval among the peasants. It is the wealthy land owners that are causing the unrest. They feel they should have the power since they control the wealth. Guess which side the Bush* administration is for. a hint it isn't the Democratically elected officials. The Bush* administration is supporting a coup just like in Venezuela

10. Haiti and Venezuela.
There seem to be a lot of similarities between the two nations. Opposition to their democratically-elected leaders comes mainly from a wealthy minority. Popular portrayal of both leaders in the U.S. press begrudgingly admits they were elected, but insinuates "autocratic tendencies" without going into detail. And - oh yeah - both leaders are populist leftists.

14. This is following the pattern of the short-lived Venuzuala coup.
I predict it, too, will fail. People are seeing through the U.S.-backed "opposition".
