Man Convicted of Raping Children Publicly Executed in Iran
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - A man convicted of raping more than 20 children was hanged Tuesday in a public square of a southern Iranian town. Residents watched and blew whistles in approval, the sentencing judge said.

Mohammad Ali Firouzi, 34, was hanged from a crane in Marvdasht, the twon where he committed his crimes, Judge Karam Ali Bahrami told The Associated Press.

Firouzi received 173 lashes - 74 for robbery and molestation and 99 for the 15 rape counts he did not confess to - before being executed, Bahrami said by telephone.

"He was a wild animal in the shape of a human being," said Ali Reza, a Marvdasht resident who would not give his full name.

"The public hanging should serve as a lesson to potential criminals not to do what Firouzi did," he said.

2. 173 lashes THEN the hanging?
A tad excessive, eh? Oh, and I'm sure there have been other public executions in Iran. What was Firouzi's excuse for not being deterred from his crimes?

3. Iranian people - you don't wanna mess with 'em!
<<"The public hanging should serve as a lesson to potential criminals not to do what Firouzi did," he said.

But another man who identified himself only as Hasan said he felt bad for the loss of another human life, even if it was that of a convicted criminal.

"It's true that he was a criminal but watching a man being hanged is not nice at all," he said.

Families of victims said most of Firouzi's victims were aged five to nine years. Firouzi was married and had a baby. His family didn't show up for the execution Tuesday.

Convicts are hanged in public in Iran only if a court deems that their offenses injured public sentiments. >>

These are not the kind of people you care to have pissed off at you, believe me. I wonder what other sorts of methods they have for treating their criminals.

LESSON #1: Never mess with a pack of angry Iranians!

Ewwwww! Talk about cruel and unusual punishment!

Firouzi received...99 (lashes) for the 15 rape counts he did not confess to...

Interesting legal concept--I think Ashcroft would love it!

6. I guess this bleeding heart is not overly aghast
Sorry, but child rapists don't get much sympathy from me ...

Though I do prefer life in prison for such crimes, and a so called *fair trial* before hand
