Pakistan court investigates Taliban flogging video
Source: The Guardian

Pakistan's supreme court today launched an investigation into a video showing Taliban militants flogging a 17-year-old woman, hours before top American officials were due in Islamabad for talks on the country's deteriorating security situation.

The recently restored chief justice, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, summoned senior government officials before a special eight-judge bench in response to public outrage over the video, which shows a bearded militant whipping the screaming woman 34 times.

The video was shot in the Swat valley, where the North-West Frontier government signed a controversial peace deal with Taliban militants in February.

Chaudhry, who got his job back last month after two years of street protests, berated senior officials for failing to provide a satisfactory explanation of the incident and for failing to produce the girl, named as Chaand Bibi, in court.

3. They are not questioning the punishment. It's the way it was carried out that is being reviewed
I'm sure a higher court will review the Pak supreme court findings....if need be

Religious parties reluctant to condemn girl’s lashing in Swat

snip
A female religious scholar requesting anonymity said that the video could be propaganda against the peace deal in Swat......

She said that such punishments should be given in privacy while women should be involved in the procedure rather men. “It is condemnable that men were holding the women as there must be women while doing so,” she said.

She however said that Taliban could not do it as openly as they were quite sensible people.

I won't post the video in question as those here with weak constitutions may accidentally open it and see first hand much ado about nothing
:sarcasm:

4. You seem to be confused.
The OP's article clearly indicates that Pakistanis are generally outraged over the incident. Some of them are calling for some very severe retribution for the perpetrators. Your article cites statements by religious leaders.

6. Why do you ignore the obvious? As the sectarian government falls, the fundamentalist movement gains

strength through intimidation,fear and "negotiation"

I didn't cherry pick the quotes, just posted the obvious points of what is happening with this case. The general population will continue the exodus keeping their opinions to themselves as the "civilized cities" swell with refugees.
Sectarian government is about to fall with the appeasement policy and I'm sure the supreme court will rule it "constitutional"

8. In the post I initially responded to, you said:
"They are not questioning the punishment. It's the way it was carried out that is being reviewed". You then posted a link to an article, quoting statements by religious leaders, falsely implying that the sentiments expressed belong to the chief justice featured in the opening article and perhaps all Pakistanis in general.

It seems as though you were utilizing a bit of dishonesty to press your 'point'. Or perhaps you were simply confused.

It's okay to beat the crap out of someone as long as they do it in private and it's meted out by other women. G-d save us from some of your followers.
