Ted Stevens should run against Palin, Alaska Republican says
Source: CNN

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Now that the corruption case against former Sen. Ted Stevens has been dropped, Alaska Rep. Don Young wants Stevens to run for governor — a move that would set up a Republican primary between the veteran lawmaker and Sarah Palin, if she decides to seek a second term in 2010.

"Personally I'd like to see him run for governor, and that's my personal feeling," Young told the Alaska Public Radio Network on Thursday. "So, we'll see what happens down the line. He probably won't, but I think that would be a great way to cap off a great career as being the governor of the state of Alaska."

Stevens will be 87 years old by the time the next governor takes office in January 2011.

Other top Alaska Republicans, including Palin and Alaska GOP chairman Randy Ruedrich, said Thursday that Democratic Sen. Mark Begich should step aside so a new vote can be held now that the charges against Stevens have been dropped by the Justice Department.

-----

(Young)"Sen. Begich, in all due respect, won the race," he said. "There is no other recourse. He has taken office, he is now the new senator."

1. Alaska has a history of electing corrupt governors

So Stevens would fit right in.

9. I don't agree
Stevens would win. He's been a "leader" in Alaska for many, many years. He's their "Uncle Ted".

10. The charges were dropped because of prosecutor "problems", although that does mean
he's no longer looking at a sentence, it does not ,by any means, mean he did not do what he was charged with. Just that he got away with it, he is still corrupt.

15. Can you say "Pubs have double standards?" The charges against the Ayers were dropped
because of prosecutorial misconduct and the Pubs, including the Palin Alaskan Pub, call the Ayers terrorists, rather than war protestors. Charges against Stevens get dropped for the same reason and they want to canonize his corrupt behind.

11. Republicans are still trying to spin themselves out of the Corrupt Bastards Clubhouse.
and their 'Up is Down' posturing on "illegal" gifts and "lying"
and their willful blindness to convictions of corruption
just comes off as less than clever denials of wrongdoing.

They cannot assert with a straight face, "He did nothing wrong."
They know that line gets you laughed out of the credible universe.

So, why is their spin allowed to dominate the conversation?

14. There was no corruption case. He was charged with filing false reports
He filed his annual Senate financial reports and withheld information. That is what he was charged with, not acceptinmg bribes or corruption. He is guilty of filing false reports and was found guilty by a jury and no matter what other evidence was not introduced he is still guilty of filing false information.

16. A public official filing false reports on gifts he got is not corrupt? By what standard?
Edited on Fri Apr-03-09 04:51 PM by No Elephants
What is the reason that the disclosure requirement exists?

Why would a Senator falsify that disclosure?

17. I should rephrase that, yes filing false reports is corruption
But it isn't as people here are saying. That if only he had had some letter saying he asked to be sent a bill. He said in his trial that everything was just being stored at his house. Then he said his wife handled everything concerning the house and he knew nothing about any of it. But he was charged with filing false reports and he was found guilty of that. He was not found guilty of accepting bribes or any some such. He filed falsly and nothing he says now will change that.
