G20 family photo restaged - twice

By Brian Wheeler
Political reporter, BBC News

Picture One: Guess where Stephen Harper was meant to be in the 'family photo'?

Picture Two: As if by magic, Mr Harper appears but where is Mr Berlusconi?

They may be trying to come together to save the world - but coming together for a team photo appears beyond them.

G20 leaders had to restage a "family" pic after Canadian PM Stephen Harper failed to show up - officials denied reports he had taken a toilet break.

3. LOL, maybe stevie's very public visit to the "loo" caused...
Berlusconi's kidneys to send a "not to be ignored" message!

This is so funny, especially given stevie has NO sense of humour and the ribbing he took from the other world leaders at the 1st re-take must have killed him!

I don't like our Prime Minister, but he's clever

Look at this other picture

and here's the link to the extra story around our "leader"

http://www.cbc.ca/world/story/2009/04/02/harper-g20-photo358.html

Harper was scheduled to stand in the right flank of the group next to German Chancellor Angela Merkel for the original photo.

A second attempt to gather the leaders for the photograph was made about an hour later with Harper there.

Some of the other leaders ribbed Harper as they gathered for the second take, reportedly calling out, "Harper, Harper, is Harper here? Harper, this one's for you."

And it's already a national joke in Canada.

NOT what he hoped to be noticed for.

13. No. No he is not
He may be a horse's ass, but he is of no comparison to Bush. Hundreds of thousands have died violently for Bush's choices, and tens of millions have had their wealth drained away across the globe. Bush has stripped civil liberties from Americans, while torturing in their name, and marring the entire legacy of a country to the world. Do you have *any* idea what it was like living in Bush's America? It touches you and changes you. The term "Hope" will forever have no meaning. I don't see that same crushing effect in Canada due to Harper's policies (despite some being scoffed at).

Harper is one of the most successful (he is still tickin) conservative minority leaders in Canada's history, and his approvals are a bit higher than where Bush was (suggesting he isn't absolutely out of touch). Im not defending the guy, but he is no Satan. Maybe he is Satan's renegade sperm, but no Satan.

18. Perhaps you've been away too long,
and are unaware of the changes and new directions in Canada. The religious extremists running Harper's office, the anti-science, pro-military policies and so on.

The polls have shown him dropping and Ignatieff rising, so that now they're tied.

20. Been away?
Ive been away from my home in the states for many months while living in Canada, but by no means, does that make me lose perspective of exactly what Bush did to the country that I grew up in. He took a false hint of promise and filled it with a void of utter despair. He brought down death, suffering, and poverty on the country and the world, while pursing his cowboy president place in history. Do you have any idea what it is like living in Bush's America? I do. Either half the populace blindly worships and follows the lunacy, or they curse his name beneath bated breath and trudge through an increasingly painful mundane existence. He tore apart people's life who cared enough to open their eyes.

Ive also lived in Harper's Canada (if only for almost a year since immigrating). People here seem cynical in general. Many are ambivalent. Everyone is free to offer criticisms and scoff at his follies. I see no one here drowning in disillusionment, and trying to exist in a frustrated state equivalent to digging through a concrete wall with your fingernails. Maybe I'm just not looking hard enough. Everything about Canada (politicians, people, and policies included) seems very moderate, and healthy in its moderation. If you compare him to Bush, do you first understand the extreme polarization he brought, and stress and hatred that spread across the country with it?

22. Your profile says you live in Canada.
In your earlier post, you said, 'Do you have *any* idea what it was like living in Bush's America? It touches you and changes you.'

So I assumed you were an ex-pat Canadian. Sorry if I got it wrong.

Harper is an extremist to Canadians. And we don't want to go any further down that road. We aren't as frustrated or as upset because everyone knows the Liberals are coming back after their recent problems.

24. Well I do now
Im a US expat, Canadian immigrant.

I understand that Harper is on the right, but he has been moderate enough on policies to make it through many confidence votes. In the US (due to majority in Congress and some odd procedures), Bush would ram any damn thing through he wanted all the time (and the "opposition" party complied most often). It was a nightmare.

From the last I read, Harper and Iggy have similar favorable ratings (which is why I suggested he can't be as far out of touch as Bush). I realize Harper is going to be gone soon. I just think a little perspective is needed it. It almost undermines the liberal experience in the US to compare what they went through to what Canadians went through under Harper. I mean...well, you know there were quite a few politically driven suicides under Bush, right? It was absolute hopelessness.

25. Thanks for straightening that out.
The point is, we are trying to prevent what happened in the US from happening in Canada.

Harper wouldn't be in there at all if the Liberal party hadn't had a meltdown. And during that meltdown, Harper got to push a lot of things through that shouldn't have happened.

Yes, I've followed the US situation closely, and it's why I want Harper gone as soon as possible.

21. Harper rah-rahed bush on his choices...
so he is almost as culpable as bush, imo. If harper had been the PM instead of Chretien, we would be in Iraq and equally responsible for the "Hundreds of thousands(that have) have died violently".

harper is a bush wannabe, he would have loved to have had a majority government in order to implement the same kind of policies bush did. Canadians, thank heavens, didn't give him his wish.

He is pond scum, no better than bush in any way, imo.

16. I agree - we are sending our young troops to fight a losing war - BUSH's WAR, not ours . .
.
.
.

Noone from that country attacked us, but they may in the future seeing as we joined the BushGang as combat personnel.

We are losing our reputation as peacekeepers, and losing our young to a lost cause initiated by Bush, supported by Martin, then Harper.

Harper lost ANY respect I could have mustered up for a Conservative when he approved the extended mission in Afghanistan.

WE ARE MAKING ENEMIES.

That's not our way.

But it's Harper's.

(sigh)
