Taliban say U.S. reconciliation offer "lunatic"
Source: Reuters

KABUL, April 1 (Reuters) - Taliban insurgents rejected on Wednesday a U.S. offer of "honourable reconciliation" as a "lunatic idea" and said the withdrawal of foreign troops was the only way to end the war in Afghanistan.

With the Afghan conflict now in its eighth year, NATO-led forces and the Taliban are locked in a bloody stalemate with violence set to rise further this year as more U.S. troops arrive and seek to contain the insurgency ahead of August elections.

President Barack Obama is redoubling U.S. efforts with more troops, more diplomatic effort and more economic assistance, but he has also already spoken of the need for an "exit strategy".

(snip)

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told an international conference on Afghanistan on Tuesday that those members of the Taliban who abandoned extremism must be granted an "honourable form of reconciliation".

1. Well, they would wouldn't they.
Edited on Wed Apr-01-09 10:03 AM by Turbineguy
Now we know.

Maybe we can make a deal with them. As long as they promise to just murder Afghanis, they can have the place.

We usually have no problems with regimes who just kill their own people.

2. Amazing how the Afghanis survived all these centuries without the USA's killing machine
.
.
.

All these bombs and bullets(many laced with depleted uranium) will improve their lifestyle.

Why can't they see that?

silly Easterners . .

18. you don't know much about the history of Afghanistan, do you?
And anyone that thinks the Taliban gives a flying fuck about the welfare of Afghanis, particularly non Pashtuns and women, is utterly mistaken.

15. I think the argument is sort of like us being the police.
If they have nukes the crazy bastards might use them just because they want to nuke somebody. We don't want that, so we stop them.

19. Oh, wait.
The point of nukes is not to use them, but to have the potential to use them. They're a poison pill against invasion, as it were.

Iraq had no nuclear weapons and we overran it. Same with Afghanistan. Iran is moving as fast as it can to make itself invulnerable, not to tiny Israel which is basically a flea to them, but to another US move on the Caspian Basin oil. Bush was damned clear that he wanted Iraq, Iran, and Syria under his control. NOTHING stopped him from invading Iraq. Right now, finances and a Democratic president are hindering the Grand Insane Plan of the Oil Entities, but that could change in a heartbeat.

Petraeus is making Israel the boogeyman here, but it isn't Israel that has Iran scared shitless, it's the US which murdered Iraq in the name of liberty.

Afghanistan for most of the 90's. The Taliban weren't recognized as such by most nations however they were given recognition by of all countries Pakistan.
