LAX travelers nickel and dime their way...

LAX travelers nickel and dime their way out of thousands of dollars each month passing through security

By Ian Gregor Daily Breeze

A tall green safe on the top floor of a Century Boulevard office building testifies to the forgetfulness of Los Angeles International Airport passengers.

Inside the safe, in cream-colored canvas bags, are thousands of coins -- mostly American currency but also a smattering of Canadian dollars, Japanese yen and euros. The coins were forgotten by travelers who had dumped them in plastic bins while they walked through the metal detectors at LAX's 51 passenger screening lanes.

Typical daily hauls range from a couple of dollars at Terminal 1, where low-cost Southwest Airlines is the main player, to $50 at the Tom Bradley International Terminal, where 32 carriers scoop up and spit out passengers. Monthly takes from the airport's nine terminals run into the thousands of dollars.

1. I left my wallet at the security area
the last time I traveled through a US airport. There was one coin in the coin pocket, and that set off the alarm. So I had to put the wallet in the basket, along with all my other carry-on stuff. I walked away without retrieving the wallet. Fortunately, it was a small airport, and one of the security guys found me and gave me the wallet.
