Bush can win in California, governor says

(snip)

He also said Bush's election success in California will hinge on what the president does for Californians.

"If the federal government does great things for California this year, I think there's no two ways about it, that President Bush can have California" in November's general election, Schwarzenegger said.

He added: "Californian people are like a mirror, you know that what you do for them they will do back for you."

35. I've been predicting this for months
Actually, I had a perfectly good clue, in fact a bald-faced admission of part of their plan.

On Monday before Arnold announced on Friday night that he was running for Gov. in the recall election, a column appeared in the dreaded WashingtonTimes saying that the Bush/Cheney campaign thought New York and California were "ripe for the picking." I knew right then and there that there was trouble brewing, and Schwarzenegger's announcement confirmed it. This was the backstory.

I said all they'd need to do now with a Repug Gov was:

* Get some nice federal largesse for CA -- Arnold is bragging about his ability to do just that, and he doesn't even have any idea WHAT yet, just that he, Mr. Popular, can get nice things for CA

* Send Bush out for lotsa nice photo ops

* Pump up the poll numbers for Bush (ask the right poll questions of the right people)

* Steal the damned election on their touchscreen and optical scan voting machines

I begged people to get involved and NOT let Arnold win CA -- get involved with the recall, get involved with the damned machines. Some people ridiculed me.

You can sit and watch it play out, people (esp. you Californians), or get busy and do something about it.

And you New Yorkers better listen up too.

41. I'm in New York (Upstate)
While I see the occasional Bush/Cheney bumper sticker, most people I've come in contact with are virulently anti-Bush this year. While I'd expect this in NYC, Upstate NY tends to be very Republican. Even in my district (Sweeney is my "Rep.") its seems that there is a strong sentiment that is anti-Bush. I don't think NY will be a problem for the Dems.

3. Sure if you rig the election
Some Repubs here want a new prop 187 type item on the ballet.

When Dems see that they vote no then they vote against any Repub on the ballot and a new prop 187 will make all Dems want to vote.

34. Prop 187 passed in 1994, I think
and it blocked any assistance to illegals.

Many Californian realize the heavy drain that assistance to illegal immigrants - most of them are from Mexico - poses. This is one of those unfunded mandates. Federal laws demand that children of illegal immigrants be taught like everyone else, that hospitals treat illegal immigrants and so forth. The problem with prop. 187 was that it was hiding - not too well - racist tones and eventually was found to be unconstitutional.

If "son of 187" will be on the November ballot, it could galvanize many liberals and many Latino voters to go out and vote.

5. Arnold comes up with the "Duh Factor."
Edited on Mon Feb-23-04 06:24 PM by The Backlash Cometh
His brilliant observation: if Bush pumps federal money into California, Bush can win California. Well, Duh. You can say that about any state. In fact, one of the things that the Republicans did to neutralize the Democratic voter base was to dry up the federal programs that were once associated with Democratic policies. No money means you have voters who are disconnected from the party and the system. Of course, you also have Americans who are leaner, angrier and less willing to cooperate with each other as a community. But hey, who's looking at the big picture?

But I think Bush will have a hard time doing that when gas is at $3 a gallon and the rest of the country is only paying about $1.70 and he didn't do anything to stop it. Not to mention his record-setting deficit, and that the recall was BECAUSE of the same thing.

about chimp helping California. Anyway, what mechanism is in place for chimp to do anything? A declare a federal disaster area? Otherwise wouldn't "help" would have to move through the congress? - and since it doesn't have anything to do with our "terror threat" that would be unlikely.

Arnold is an idiot.

23. No money to do anything, even if he wanted to do
As President Lincoln so aptly put it "The bottom is out of the tub."

Bush cannot go around the country like his father before him, or President Clinton to some extent, handing out irrigation projects, agricutural research centers, and roads. No money, they broke us in three goddamn years!

California may be a few points closer than you might think -- a GOP governor will help a bit from a logistics standpoint alone -- but Bush still loses by 9 - 10 points.

37. He's not shaking down the Imperials -- he's talking with
their backing. He's the front man. This way HE gets to look good too. This way, Orrin Hatch's Constitutional Amendment might look like a good thing to pass -- the one that would let foreign-borns become President. I guess the Bush Crime Family wants to have a Plan B if Jeb is too damanged to run in 2008.

30. Very few polls out recently about Herr Gropenfuehrer. . .
or his "signature initiative": Proposition 57, the massive bond issue he's promoting as the panacea for all that ills the State.

Der Gropernator has put his political fortune into this Proposition, which as of the last poll I can find about it (early January) was trailing, 35 percent to 44 percent, with 21 percent undecided. As the initiative is unopposed by any organized group, the lack of recent polls for it tells me it is still trailing.

We'll know better next Tuesday if Herr Schickelgroper can help Shrub in November, for if he can't get his own agenda passed he's very little chance of aiding others.

18. NO...he can't.
They are delusional if they think that just because the groper got in it means the state is going their way. The recall was a fluke and would never have come about except for Davis being such a scum that even most Democrats had a hard time defending him. I know that I couldn't even find anything nice to say about Davis and while I voted against the recall I had to hold my nose when I did it. Davis got what he deserved, unfortunately the rest of the citizens in California have to suffer for it.
