International Herald TribuneWARSAW, Poland: Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk says the country will increase its military force in Afghanistan by 400 troops before the summer presidential and local elections there.
Tusk said Tuesday his government will officially ask President Lech Kaczynski to approve the decision as the armed force's supreme commander. Kaczynski has requested the increase and is expected to sign it.
Tusk said the increase was intended to increase the security of around 1,600 troops Poland already has on a NATO mission in the central province of Ghazni.
President Barack Obama and NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer have called for more troops to provide security before and during the crucial presidential and local elections scheduled in Afghanistan for Aug. 20.
