Buick ties with Jaguar for first in J.D. Power dependability study
Ford brands take four segment awards
BY BRENT SNAVELY • FREE PRESS BUSINESS WRITER • MARCH 19, 2009

General Motors Corp.'s Buick brand tied for first place with Jaguar in a closely watched vehicle dependability study released by J.D. Power and Associates today while four of Ford Motor Co.'s vehicles had the highest rank in their segment.

“Buick has ranked among the top 10 nameplates each year since the study was last redesigned in 2003, while Jaguar has moved rapidly up the rankings,” David Sargent, vice president of automotive research at J.D. Power and Associates said in a statement.

It was the first time in 15 years that Lexus didn't finish first or tied for first among J.D. Power's brand, or nameplate, but it still did well. The top five brands overall were, in order, Buick, Jaguar, Lexus, Toyota and Mercury.

15. Jags have been very reliable since Ford bought them....
in the late 90's. They cleaned up the awful electronic problems (Lucus Lamps: Prince of Darkness).

If you want a good reliable used car, the Jags should be considered. They still sell cheaply based on their pre Ford reputation.

Now I wouldn't buy any German car due to unreliability. Germans can no longer make a car that actually works beyond 75,000 miles, IMO.

4. That's what I was thinking.
I spent ten years in the business and a used Jaguar on the lot was the kiss of death. You couldn't keep them running.

I'd buy a used Buick with that 3800 engine in a heart-beat.

7. I bought a new 2005 Buick Terraza for my wife and had nothing but problems with it
In fact, they had so many issues with the car that they discontinued it. Further, when we would take it to the dealer, they would keep it for days - tell us they fixed the problem, but when we got it home we would discover that they had disconnected things like the radio or DVD system - which were tied to the electronic doors - in order to fix the "problem." Which was the side doors would not not close or would open randomly, the tailgate would not shut (all electronic). I could not get rid of that car fast enough and will never buy another Buick again.

I think JD has been compromised. Jaguar and Buick? Maybe it is because they don't sell any units, therefore nothing to fix.

9. Unless soemthing has changed at Jaguar.....
This isn't a good thing. Jaguar has been notorious for many years for very poor electrical components. I heard that when Ford took over they fixed them, though.

16. I like the many outdated opinions of Jags reliability record.....
because it keeps the price much lower for their used cars.

Every car Jag has put out since Ford bought them have ranked above average in reliability.

They're great buys, used.

19. My last 4 cars have been Fords and the small amount of repairs I've done...
has been remarkable, too me. My current one, a 2000 Merc Sable, the Taurus clone, has 142,000 miles and I've spent $20 total in repairs. I'd have traded it by now but the car is still virtually flawless, gets 28+ mpg on the highway and has a huge trunk with fold down rear seats.

Wife has an Acura which is also, flawless, but has been no better than my Taurus/Sables.

13. Wh-what the ffff......?
Right now I know where a Series I XKE is. A mechanical engineer who put a man on the moon occasionally hauls it out and works on it, but I think at this point even he concedes that making it run both reliably and well is too large an undertaking.

I'll need to see, with my own eyes and fingers, a Jaguar that runs reliably and well.

31. The design of Buicks are changing
The Enclave is a great looking car. Buick's new design for the LaCrosse is coming out this year and is also very nice. Building boring cars that look outdated has been Buick's problem. With the new vehicles they have out or coming out, the brand has a lot of potential.

25. Ok, I'm confused
Though Jags are awfully pretty - the one thing I've always heard about them (from owners, even) is how ridiculously undependable they are - how you'd best plan to own another car because that one will spend enormous amounts of time in the shop.

Sometimes, people wander into the wrong party until they realize they are corporate shill neo theos at heart. Then, they migrate to their true nest.

Approaching 130k miles and runs as smooth as silk. Only issue has been with window regulators. Two have gone bad. I replaced the second one myself for around $100.00. First one had dealer replace...cost me over $500! Buicks are a great car. I'd buy another in a heart beat.

51. Ford really has seemed to improve quite a bit.
My father in law had a 1998 Ford Explorer that did alright for the first 70,000 miles are so, and then all hell broke loose and it broke down left and right.

He got rid of that and begrudgingly took a chance on a 2008 Ford Edge crossover. He has 36,000 miles on it already & it has been perfect so far. It drives far nicer than any Ford I have ever driven in the past.
