Lockyer (Calif. A.G.) rejects halt to nuptials/dismisses gov's demand
Lockyer rejects halt to nuptials
He dismisses governor's demand as a political ploy

State Attorney General Bill Lockyer on Saturday rebuffed Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's demand that he force an end to San Francisco's same-sex marriages, calling the directive political rhetoric.

"The governor can direct the Highway Patrol. He can direct the next 'Terminator 4' movie if he chooses. But he can't direct the attorney general in the way he's attempted to do," Lockyer said, adding that Schwarzenegger's written directive "was a statement designed for consumption at the Republican convention."

(snip)

Lockyer called that statement "preposterous" and said it is the kind of "exaggerated, hot rhetoric" that risks stirring people up to commit hate crimes.

He said that he and Schwarzenegger have agreed all along that same-sex marriage is illegal under California law. He said it is his duty to defend the state against a lawsuit by San Francisco that calls the state's prohibition against same-sex marriage unconstitutional. Lockyer said his office will file a response early this week.

By dumping the gay marriage hot potato in Lockyer's lap, Schwarzenegger has managed to ease the concerns of his conservative supporters while still staying well clear of an issue he doesn't really need to get involved in.

2. Der Gropenator und Der Goobernator
Good stuff! Alright Lockyer!

Seems as though the Gropenator (Gov.) and the Goobernator (Pres.) have something in common: "All you God-fearing evangelical people come out and vote for us on election day, but don't expect anything beyond token hot-potato when the rubber meets the road!"

3. That's NOT what the New York Times says

The New York Times says that Lockyer is working with Ah Nold

Article at http://www.nytimes.com/2004/02/22/national/22GAYS.html

Key part:

A spokeswoman for Mr. Lockyer said Saturday that the attorney general's office planned to seek a judgment declaring San Francisco's action in violation of state law.

"We are conferring with the governor's legal affairs staff to develop strategy," said the spokesman, Nathan Barankin. "They are on board, we are on board and we will be taking action soon."

LockLIAR can't have it both ways. He needs to be recalled!

17. Good!
Let this get hashed out in the courts. This will prove to be the end for the bigoted "prop 22" marriage laws. A judge has to take into consideration what the constitution (state and federal) says.

The repukes wanted this to be the number one issue for this coming election, well they are showing themselves to be the bigoted creeps they are. But more importantly they are fighting a no win battle.

They have ignored what the constitution says for far too long, and now the ghosts of those which signed the constitution is coming back to bite them in the ass.

After this election, and Bush* is out, I have every intention on flying back to SF to marry the woman I love more than life itself. And any DUers who want to witness our wedding are more than welcome.

He just dismissing the demand, not the sentiment behind it.

6. Great!
This is becoming a real ass biter for the Republicans. "Sow the wind, reap the whirlwind". Bushco can't stop it. His ignorant target group will make demands he can't satisfy. They will find him wanting. The wedge is failing. Its 50/50 now. The wind and hail is in his face.

7. It's nice to know that there are still some government officials who...
...believe in staying within the parameters of the law. They may not agree with us, but they won't willfully ignore our constitution and/or laws in order to get their way.

* and gropernator both believe their own publicity. Both are from the privileged class, one born with a silver spoon in his mouth, the other a egotistical movie star.

8. good for him
I'm so happy to see this political dissent happening. It's wrong to make a constitutional amendment against "certain people". Gay people should be allowed to enter a marriage contract or whatever you want to call it.

10. Geez, gay people are getting married in San Fran and the world hasn't
come to an end.

So what is the big deal about Gay Marriage anyway?

I'm glad this is happening.

14. Lockyer hedging his bets again...
He criticized Gray Davis for "puke politics", handing the Republicans a new phrase to use against Davis and then announced after the recall that he had voted for Arnuuuld. Now he's standing up to him? Thanks a heap, Atty. Gen. Schizoid.

13. didn't Lockyer VOTE for Arnold ?
i know one statewide democratic official voted for arnold. it wasn't our two senators. i believe it was lockyer who admitted to voting for arnold. and his problem with this marriage thing is that he doesn't like it that arnold demanded he do something even if he agrees same sex marriage is illegal in california. so lets not get too happy about it. i wont be voting for lockyer again since he voted for arnold.

Yeoww! Getting a little personal there, General.
