Ex-U.S. envoy to UN: Obama policy 'bad news for Israel'

Last update - 15:41 14/03/2009

By Shlomo Shamir, Haaretz Correspondent

Former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton said Friday that the Obama administration's fixation on resolving the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians as a means of achieving peace and stability in the Middle East is "bad news for Israel, and for America."

In an article published in the daily New York Post on Friday, John Bolton said that the pressure that the U.S. administration will exert in efforts to resolve the crisis, will be turned with force against Israel, being a U.S. ally.

"Almost invariably, Israel is the loser - because Israel is the party most dependent on the United States, most subject to U.S. pressure and most susceptible to the inevitable chorus of received wisdom from Western diplomats, media and the intelligentsia demanding concessions. When pressure must be applied to make compromises, it's always easier to pressure the more reasonable side," Bolton wrote.

Bolton, who during his stint as UN ambassador became notorious for his harsh remarks, is currently a Senior Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute.

"How will diplomatic pressure work to change Hamas or Hezbollah, where even military force has so far failed? If anything, one can predict coming pressure on Israel to acknowledge the legitimacy of these two terrorist groups, and to negotiate with them as equals," Bolton went on to say.

This from the neocon that openly spoke of nuking Chicago. People like Bolton and his allies are the real enemies of America, and of Israel. We must remain vigilant and we must rally together and oppose the oncoming onslaught of neocon propaganda whose only goal is to derail President Obama's efforts for peace in the Middle East.

2. Poor John, can't conceive of life without war, weapons, death, phosphorous, profits from
death weapons development, trade, barter, bribery.

John Bolton and I are not seeing eye to eye.

He stands for everything I disavow.

He is a repulsive leader of perpetuity in dissension and making and killing enemies.

3. It's our country that has been "the loser" in this deal - we've become a target...
...because of our one-sided dealings in the Middle East.

4. Meaningless drivel from an out of power neocon
It really doesn't matter because the only people that give a flying shit about what Bolton says is the ever shrinking core of deluded RWers that already agree with him. The vast majority of people don't care what he says.

This is just another attempt for the RW to find anything that will give them some traction against a very popular president. In this case, they are hoping they can hurt his approval ratings by painting his policies as anti-Israel. Pathetic really.

6. As long as we fail to restore the Fairness Doctrine, RW views like Bolton's will dominate...
the airwaves. This is how the RW has been able to undermine every Democratic Administration, by monopolizing the media.

10. Is it going to be up to the Comedy Channel to give us
honest reporting? It seems so.

I believe this circus with Cramer has opened many eyes. At least I would hope so. There must be honest journalists out there somewhere.

Until the Fairness Doctrine is restored, it is up to the non mainstream media to do the work that should be being done by the corporate media (read RW media) that so saturates the airwaves with their Republican talking points.

19. RW media. Sad but true.
Great point, though. The media, if they mention it at all, say Jim Cramer was taken to the woodshed. But clearly, if anyone in the corporate media was doing their job, the Stewart interview would have come across as little more than a rehash of the obvious. The media's sin of omission is glaringly obvious.

...not being able to round up all the Palestinians and use them as target practice for Israeli gun clubs is "bad news for Israel." :eyes:

8. What an Authoritarian Douche.
And he's wrong to boot.
Obama's Chief Of Staff is an Israel Firster.
Our money and weapons will continue to flow into Israel.
Our media will continue to spin that so goes Israel so goes the USA.

If Bolton had his way half of the world would be a parking lot.

12. I am soooo glad that embarrassment of a human is OUT of the administration.
He was an embarrassment to our country, much like the jack ass that lived in the White House was. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Now, I just wish he would silently fade away from the news scene.

Israel NEEDS a little shaking up. Maybe then they'll become serious toward making a lasting peace in the Middle East. The Palestinian issue needs to be resolved, and they have zero incentive to do anything today.

16. John Bolton is bad news for everyone...
and he has delusions of grandeur. He was basically fired - even under a Republican Administration and Congress - yet it never seems to have sunk in.

He took part in Question Time on British TV a couple of years ago, and came across as a serious loony.
