Iraq may lay claim to Jordan, Kuwait in future: Hamid
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/afp/20040221/wl_mideast_afp/iraq_jordan_kuwait&cid=1514&ncid=1473

BAGHDAD (AFP) - The current president of Iraq (news - web sites)'s interim Governing Council said that Baghdad could consider territorial claims over neighbouring Jordan and Kuwait in the future.

"We need our Arab brothers around us. Now, we cannot discuss this matter with them at all, but in the future, we'll see," said Mohsen Abdel Hamid, in response to a question from a Baghdad consultative council member.

Shaza Hadi al-Obeidi had asked Abdel Hamid about the status of territory, once linked to Iraq, such as Jordan and Kuwait, at an extraordinary meeting of the 37-member consultative council.

A Jordanian government spokeswoman said Amman would demand an explanation of Abdel Hamid's comments. snip

Baghdad has for decades laid claim to Kuwait as an integral part of Iraq, arguing the emirate was artificially separated by the British colonisers.

1. Seems like a valid claim to me.
This brings to mind an old Disney cartoon. "Pluto battles the fly paper". Yes indeed,Bushco is certainly reshaping the Middleeast.

2. Didn't we fight a war because of this?
It was a long time ago, but it seems like we fought a tiny war with Iraq over their invasion of Kuwait and possible machinations against Jordan. Seems like the new U.S. appointed government is back on the ole talking points again.

4. Ah the Irony (this is irony with a capital i) of it all
Way back in ancient history (1991 goodness gracious, was i wearing an onion on my belt then...) the US decides to defend Kuwait, because letting Iraq (and thus Saddam) have control over all that oil would not be good for world domination plans.

Now that Iraq is a US controlled puppet (sorry, liberated), who gives a fig about independance for Kuwait. Actually, the current administration probably wants Kuwait to become part of Iraq. Make it easier to control the oil.

I'd laugh if it wasn't so fucking sad.
