Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran join drug crackdown

VIENNA (AP) — The UN drugs agency says Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan have carried out their first joint counter narcotics operation.

The UN Office on Drugs and Crime hailed the operation as the first to pull together the rival neighbors.

Agency chief Antonio Maria Costa says the operation sent "a very important political message" to drug traffickers across the region.

UN officials told The Associated Press Wednesday that narcotics were seized and traffickers arrested in Sunday's operation.
