Aristide agrees to PM appointment

PORT-AU-PRINCE - President Jean-Bertrand Aristide has agreed to a plan aimed at quelling a growing rebellion in Haiti.

A U.S.-led diplomatic mission pressed Aristide to accept the agreement during two hours of talks on Saturday. He agreed to the appointment of an interim governing council and a new prime minister.

The country has been without a prime minister to share power since legislative elections in 2000.

The plan would also allow Aristide to stay on as president for the next two years until Feb. 6, 2006 when his mandate expires.

Opposition leader Evans Paul has been critical of the plan, noting it does not require Aristide to resign and that there is no plan to deploy foreign troops to guarantee the agreements.
