Immigration detention center to open, hiring 150

Corrections Corporation of America will hire more than 150 people in the coming months to staff the North Georgia Detention Center in Gainesville. The facility will be used to house some 500 U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainees.

Nice to see some industries are generating employment. Maybe that is why we haven't passed immigration reform yet. Who would want to destroy a whole new prison population market?

Open centers across the country and hire thousands of Americans with good paying jobs and instead of using tax dollars to house the inmates maker them pay for their facility stay.

3. Why do the words "concentration camps" come to mind?

First prisons should be run by governments not private companies. Thom Hartmann mentioned this morning that Dick Cheney is a major stockholder of one of these private prison corporations. He didn't mention the name but I believe that there were prison guards in Abu Ghraib among the contractors who came from private prison corporations. This can't be good.

According to the Center for Responsive Politics, in 2005, the company paid close to $3.4 million dollars to five different firms to lobby the federal government. The company’s chairman, William Andrews, and its CEO, John Ferguson, have been generous donors to Republican senatorial and Presidential candidates. Philip Perry, who is the son-in-law of Dick Cheney, and who served as general counsel for the Department of Homeland Security between 2005 and 2007, lobbied for C.C.A. while he was at the law firm of Latham & Watkins. He also had oversight of government discretionary payments to C.C.A. while serving as general counsel at the Office of Management and Budget.

So apparently, Dick Cheney has an interest in prisons according to my first link. I'll bet he's a major stock holder in this company.

7. What's sad is that this is actually a step up from where we are now

Right now, undocumented aliens and asylum seekers are detained in general population at county and state correctional facilities. Talk about a lovely reception to the US for someone fleeing repression in their country of origins, coming to the US to be tossed in with rapists and murderers where they get beaten and abused, for no crime other than having presented themselves at our borders and requested asylum. So, in a perverse way, setting up concentration camps for people the government feels it must detain at least takes them out of the sadistic environs of correctional facilities.
