YouTube to block UK music videos

YouTube is blocking all premium music videos to UK users after failing to reach a new licensing agreement with the Performing Right Society (PRS).

Thousands of videos will be unavailable to YouTube users from later on Monday.

Patrick Walker, YouTube's director of video partnerships, told BBC News that the move was "regrettable".

Steve Porter, head of the PRS, said he was "outraged... shocked and disappointed" by YouTube's decision.

Is to big anyway, we need a public free source google like search engine with open algorithms.

Google is basically the index card file of the internet library.

Would we ever have agreed to turn our public libraries over to a company? We wouldn't because access to information is too important, so news like this is just more reasons to break up companies to big, or to secure knowledge bases for the public good, not for the profit of a few.

4. The point is they are not complete competition.

Because each of those other search engines is owned by a large corporate entity.

right now we have corporate to corporate competition.

The corporate system is shareholders decide, so it is rule by few with money.

Government is rule by elected people.

There should also be an element of many to few competition, or government to corporation.

So a government funded free source search engine site would add that competition.

You can't really step into a corporate ran news station(google information dispersal makes it like news) but you can fund PBS or CSPAN as a counter balance to POV of the few.

Ask.com was started by same guy that started fox news. and you can see the bias in which articles come up first.

It is possible Google/youtube does not filter for self advantage, but the possibility should be countered with few to many competition.

They have too often been in the business of suppressing entertainment and it is time that someone slapped them down.

5. At first I thought that this meant that...

US users wouldn't be able to watch UK vids and I was about to throw the biggest fit ever, even though I don't really watch any UK vids, come to think of it. I'm selfishly glad that it's the other way around. I <3 Youtube more than is good for me. I'll srsly have to fight someone if they block my access for any reason.

I can't imagine those Brits taking this lying down.

I can see the video and music companies point about copyright infringement, but I think those issues need to be re-evaluated in this new medium of the internet. After all aren't the videos a good way to sell the music?

As far as being interested in UK music. I think it's great to be subjected to all kinds of world music. You never know what you may discover. That for me is the most dangerous thing about this act. Already there is a practice of record companies changing song names, even mixes, or even tracks for release in America as opposed to the European release. I would rather want to make those choices myself and hear it all. This could lead to a future where the big entertainment media corps narrow down the choices drastically for what gets on the net and extending their censoring/tailoring practices to web video in deciding for us what song or version of it is "appropriate" for your particular country to see.
