Happy Birthday, Mr. Senator
Source: Washington Post

Washington, on certain special nights, feels like America's living room writ large.

Last night, it was Uncle Teddy's living room.

They all crammed in, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy's whole Washington familial tableau, eager to wish him a happy, if belated, 77th birthday. The senators and the staffers, the television anchors and the social secretaries -- generations of official Washington all brought together. They slipped into gowns and dark suits, and mingled familiarly in the red-carpeted halls of the Kennedy Center . . .

Happy Birthday indeed, to one of the greatest senators in U.S. history.

11. It's not Sir Ted.
As Americans, we don't recognize titles of nobility amongst our own. He can be Sir Edward when he hops the pond, but over here he's just Teddy, the Lion of Liberalism.

15. It was always Lion of the Senate. Lately, though, the RW started calling him Lion of Liberalism.

18. Well, to be honest...
wouldn't it be fair to say the latter term is correct, at least to a great extent?

Or would you suggest he was, instead, anti-liberal?

Actually, there might be some justification to that argument...

20. They're both correct. Lion of the Senate is preferable and more correct. And less RW.

25. FYI, it's not Sir Edward even when he "hops the pond" ...
> As Americans, we don't recognize titles of nobility amongst our own.
> He can be Sir Edward when he hops the pond

He received a honorary award in recognition of his actions but is not
a citizen of the UK (or commonwealth) and so cannot be called "Sir Edward"
even over here (except by tabloids and other people who don't particularly
care about facts).

17. Just as well. Some nut may have shot him if he ran. And he would have stopped being Senator.

19. Even RW"pundits" in Massachusetts acknowledge how much he has done for the state. I pray he
lives to the same age his mom did.

Thank you and bless you, Sir. (That "sir" is from me, not the Queen.)
